Apple’s next iPhones or Apple Watches could automatically detect car accidents and dial 911 by using a special chip. This chip can spot sharp changes in motion and alert Apple to potential problems

  • Apple Watch and iPhone could soon have a feature that automatically dials 911 if there is an accident.
  • The ‘crash detection feature’ could be revealed as early as next year
  • The accelerometer chip would detect any changes in gravity or force of impact and alert the authorities.

Apple may only have announced its new iPhones and Apple Watches in the last month, but the next version could include a feature that automatically dials 911 if there is a car accident.

According to documents seen by The Wall Street Journal which first reported the news, the ‘crash detection” feature could be released as soon as next-year.

Smart devices would be able detect crashes using the accelerometer chip. It could detect any changes or sharp rises in gravity or a force for impact.

The Journal reported that Apple has been testing the feature for the past year.

A new Apple Watch could also have the feature

Apple Watch and iPhone 5 could include a feature that automatically dials 911 when there is a car accident.

The crashes would be detected using the accelerometer chip, which could see any changes or sharp increases in gravity or a force of impact

The Apple Watch has had fall detection since the Series 4, but this advancement would be even more.

There have been many instances where fall detection saved lives. One example was when a New Hampshire teacher fell through ice while ice skating.

Apple introduced a feature to measure a person’s walking stability as part of the iOS 15 operating system.

Users will receive notifications if their steadyness is ‘low or very low’. They can also be given suggested exercises to increase their walking stability.

The Journal stated that Apple could change the timing of the feature or scrap it altogether.

Apple’s greatest achievement in 2019 was, according to CEO Tim Cook, ‘about Health.’

‘I believe, if you zoom out into the future, and you look back, and you ask the question, ‘What was Apple’s greatest contribution to mankind?’ it will be about health,’ Cook told CNBC’s Jim Cramer at the time.

What do ACCELEROMETERS actually do and how do they work?

To measure acceleration forces, accelerometers are used in smartphones and smartwatches.

They can detect and measure sudden movements, such as an earthquake or in a medical device that detects movement and vibration.

They are used on smartphones to help change the screen’s orientation when a user shifts it from portrait to landscape or vice versa.

These devices can be found in laptops and help protect hard drives from any damage, even sudden falls.

Accelerometers for cars can detect and even deploy airbags.
