Boris Johnson’s popularity among Tory members slips into the red for only the second time since the 2019 general election as the PM takes a hit following Westminster sleaze scandal and migrant Channel crossings crisis

  • Boris Johnson’s appeal among Tory members has fallen into the red in this month
  • Since the 2019 election, it is only second time Mr. Johnson has received a negative rating
  • The Foreign Secretary Liz Truss is now at the top for over a year.

According to a survey, Boris Johnson’s popularity has dropped in the Conservative Party ranks for the second consecutive year since 2019.

The Conservative Home website conducted a poll among Tory grassroots and gave Mr Johnson a Net Satisfaction Rating of minus 17.2.

With Chief Whip Mark Spencer, second lowest on the list and the Prime Minister at the bottom of the list respectively, Chief Whip Mark Spencer was the worst performer with minus 21.1.

The numbers come after Mr Johnson has suffered a difficult few weeks which have included the Westminster sleaze scandal, the worsening migrant Channel crossings issue, a shambolic speech to the CBI and political attacks over the cost of living crisis.

Boris Johnson's popularity among Conservative Party members has dipped into the red for only the second time since the 2019 general election, according to a new survey

A new survey shows that Boris Johnson is not as popular among Conservative Party members anymore since 2019.

Mark Spencer

Priti Patel

Conservative Home’s recent cabinet league table survey showed Mark Spencer as the Chief Whip, while Priti Patel, Home Secretary, came third.

Conservative Home conducts monthly surveys of Tory members to determine the Cabinet’s popularity.

According to the website, Johnson was ‘clearly marked down’ because of the above issues.

This is the second consecutive time the PM has fallen into negative territory since December 2019.

His only previous rating was October 2020, when he received a rating of 10.3 due to frustration over the Government’s treatment of the coronavirus epidemic.

These numbers indicate that Spencer has been punished in Tory circles for handling the Owen Paterson lobbying crisis at the House of Commons. The Chief Whip was pushed from 17th to last place overall.

Only Mr Johnson and Mr Spencer were given a negative rating.

Priti Patel, the Home Secretary, was only able to make it into positive territory. Her score of plus 0.02 placed her in third place from the bottom.

Her popularity has plummeted from 9th to 25th place and an average score of +25 last month. This is likely due to the crisis in the Migrant Channel.

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has now been in the top spot in the Tory popularity survey for an entire year

Liz Truss, the Foreign Secretary to the Tory Party has been at the top of the Tory popularity poll for a whole year

The survey’s major winner is Foreign Secretary Liz Truss. She has been in pole position for one year.

Her November net satisfaction rating was plus 82.3. This puts her far ahead of Cabinet colleagues.

Lord Frost (the Brexit Minister) is second on plus 73.3, while Anne-Marie Trevelyan, International Trade Secretary, is third on plus 64.

With a rating score of plus 53.3, Chancellor Rishi Sonak barely made it to the top ten.
