A university boss succeeds in keeping the report secret from a bullying professor

  • Alice Gast was unable to conceal a report that found her guilty for bullying.
  • She is still in her £519,000-a-year role as president of Imperial College London
  • To prevent report going public, she claimed her bullying was ‘relatively minor’
  • In a bizarre comparison, she also compared herself with Kathleen Stock (ex-University academic).

In her efforts to hide a report that found her guilty for bullying, a university boss failed.

Professor Alice Gast continues in her £519,000-a-year role as president of Imperial College London even though her behaviour was found to fall ‘considerably short’ in a secret QC-led investigation.

To prevent publication of the report, she said her bullying was “relatively minor” and strangely made comparisons to Kathleen Stock (ex-University of Sussex) who, despite being subject to a hate campaign for her views on transgender issues, has never been accused of bullying her or had her conduct investigated.

The Office for Students, the university regulator is currently investigating Imperial for the scandal. Yesterday the Information Commissioner’s Office ordered the publication of large portions of the report.

Imperial admitted that it needed to “improve”, but declined to reveal the details of Professor Gast’s misbehaviour and Chief Financial Officer Muir Sanderson’s misconduct.

The Daily Mail raised a Freedom of Information Challenge and the ICO responded by saying it ‘considers there to be a stronger public interest in disclosing additional of the report, so that students and staff at the college may make their own decisions’.

Professor Gast is from Texas and will be leaving Imperial in the summer. She has earned millions over her eight-year tenure.
