A tearful young girl was refused permission to board the last bus home after the driver refused to open the doors due to ‘health and safety reasons’.
After visiting friends, the 16-year old girl begged the driver for permission to take her on the bus from Beverley to Dunswell in East Yorkshire on Sunday, November 7.
She pleaded with the driver to stop her from getting in the way, but he ignored them.
The standoff was witnessed by a police officer who attended another incident at the station. He eventually intervened and gave the teenager a ride home.
The young girl filmed video footage of her standing before the East Yorkshire bus service.
“Can you allow me to board the bus?” The girl asks. The driver then beeps.
She adds, “I must get home.” “Why?” Simply open the door.
While the driver continues to beep his horn, the driver does not stop the girl from remaining in front of the bus. She zooms in on him, who then turns away from her and continues to beep the horn.
When the little girl starts to weep, you can clearly hear her saying: “Just open my door.” You don’t understand?
An emotional young girl refused entry to the final bus leaving Beverley Bus Station, East Yorkshire on Sunday evening after driver refused to open doors for safety and health reasons.
The standoff was witnessed by a police officer who attended another incident at the station. He eventually intervened and gave the teenager a ride home.
One second later, a female cop officer walks towards the front and questions the teenage girl about what is going on.
The young, teary-eyed girl says that “He won’t allow me to ride on the bus”.
She tells the police officer where she’s going and he refuses to let her on the bus.
When asked why she didn’t, she said she doesn’t know. She added: “I missed it by one second, so I ran up to him and he wouldn’t let me continue.”
After questioning the driver of the bus, the police officer walks to his side and asks him if he is allowed to open the doors.
When asked, he replied that he was not allowed to because it would be unsafe for my health.
“She is an adult to me, and she’s late.
The PC offers a lift to the 15-year-old girl, who then tells police officers that she is 15.
The driver tells her: “I believe there’s nothing around me, she could’ve gotten on the bus.”
The driver responded, “Just as my job is to obey instructions,”
Please accept my apologies. Sorry.
The driver continues to beep his horn, but the girl stays in front of him. One point she zooms in upon the driver, and he turns his head to the side. He continues beeping his horn.
Gary Hockney was the father of the little girl and told Hull Daily Mail, ‘She was so upset. She didn’t attend college Monday because of it.
“She was afraid to get on the bus, as she uses public buses and was concerned about bumping into the driver.
‘She came back on Monday and she was in tears about it and explained that was why.’
At 9.30 on Sunday, the teenager tried to get onto the bus.
As she approached the bus, she claimed it started to move away. So that she could be visible to the driver, she decided to get in front of it while it was still in its parking lot.
Mr Hockney stated: “In her own words, which aren’t inaccurate based on the footage, she said that the bus was still in the garage and, as she approached, it began pulling away.
“She was right in front of his doors, and the driver could see her clearly. He saw her then he pulled out.
“She was crying when he started revving his engine and flashing his lights. He beeped his horn, then, fortunately, an officer at the station came and asked her what was up.
“If you take a look at the video, the driver was challenged by her and he just mentioned this simple safety and health policy.”
Gary Hockney, the father of the little girl, was very happy with the way the police officer confronted and interrogated the bus driver.
He said that he was trying to bring attention to the actions of the driver, but also praise the officer who helped his daughter.
He said, “It was such a positive that she did it.”
I would have picked her, but she was so kind.
“It might just be the fact that they don’t permit that kind of discretion. That is absurd. These companies should allow their staff to make these decisions.
“I am sure that he would allow his daughter to go in that same situation. If he witnessed someone being chased or threatened, surely there is a cut off. You show some discretion.
East Yorkshire Buses spokesperson said, “On Sunday night, one of our buses was about to leave Beverley Bus Station for its scheduled departure time. A late arrival passenger ran in front to stop it from leaving.
“Safety reasons”: Our drivers advise passengers not to let other passengers board buses after closing the doors.
The passenger refused to leave the front seat of the bus. So a station police officer dealing with antisocial behaviour spoke with the driver and offered to drive the passenger to his destination.
“The driver felt that the passenger was in good health and was happy to allow the bus to go on its way. We’d advise that passengers always ensure they arrive at their bus stop in good time, and we have live tracking features on our website and app which you can use to ensure you never miss a bus.’
