Since its inception, the tournament has been plagued by controversy due to corruption allegations during the bidding process.

Critics claim that the Arab country has been accused using forced labour to build stadiums, resulting in the deaths of thousands.

Many supporters have called for boycotts of the tournament because of Qatar’s treatment towards gay and lesbians.

Beckham assured his supporters that they will be safe, despite homosexuality being illegal.

A source said: ‘David believes in Qatar’s commitment to progress and that the World Cup — the first to be held in the Arab world — can effect significant positive change.

“He believes that football can bridge differences, but he has also seen progress on important issues.
