  • De León, who became governor in August 2020, said she had grown tired of people using religious reasoning to avoid getting the vaccine
  • The Dominican Republic reported 4,144 confirmed deaths from coronavirus and 384,208 cases.

After she claimed she would have a party for each person who died of COVID-19 and was not vaccinated, a Dominican Republic governor has been removed.

Elsa de León was relieved from her duties as governor of the northeastern province of Samaná on Monday by President Luis Abinader.

De León, who was named to the seat more than a year ago, had expressed her growing frustrations over the number of residents in Samaná who were refusing to sign up to get the coronavirus vaccine.

“I am among those who say that from now, for every person who is vaccinated against COVID, I will have a party,” she stated over the weekend, Diario Libre reported.

De León credited the Abinader administration’s efforts to get the population vaccinated, but slammed those who were shying away from getting the jab due to religious reasons and also urged others not to do so.

She said, “I don’t understand why certain people refuse to be vaccinated. This is not just because they don’t want to be vaccinated but that they also carry a negative campaign so people don’t get vaccinated.”

“It would help them to stop this attitude, and to attend the centers for vaccination. They were vaccinated when they were young and didn’t ask. They were baptized but did not ask.

“If there is a pandemic, people will not want a vaccine.”

A 20-year veteran politician who previously served as a congresswoman, de León took to Facebook after she was fired and vowed to continue to serve the public while thanking Abinader for having named her to the gubernatorial post in August 2020.

She wrote that she was grateful to her president for allowing them to include me in his administration for a short period of time.

“I will always be available to serve those who need me, with or without (a position in a public office). This doesn’t change any thing. The shark will always be the Shark.

According to data from Johns Hopkins University, the Dominican Republic has reported 4,144 deaths from COVID and 384.208 cases as of Wednesday afternoon.
