Meanwhile, the Prince of Wales’ visit to a UK aircraft carrier has been cancelled just a few days after a jet from the warship crashed in the Mediterranean.

Charles was due to tour HMS Queen Elizabeth during the final day of his tour of Egypt, but a few hours before the event his office Clarence House announced the visit would not take place.

The pilot flying an F35, estimated to be worth around £100million, ejected from the aircraft before it crashed into the ocean on Wednesday and was later rescued.

Former soldier Tobias Ellwood, who chairs the Commons Defence Select Committee, said he had ‘many questions’ about the crash.

A Clarence House spokesman said: ‘For operational reasons, the visit to HMS Queen Elizabeth has been cancelled.’

During the visit, Charles was due to meet Commodore Steve Moorhouse, Commander of the Carrier Strike Group, and Captain Ian Feasey, Commanding Officer of HMS Queen Elizabeth.

He was also scheduled to watch the launch of a F35 jet from the flight deck before meeting some of the ship’s company including US Navy and Marines.

Jets from the vessel previously participated in strikes against the remnants of the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

The 65,000-tonne Royal Navy flagship is returning to the UK from its maiden mission, which included exercises with the Indian military. It was part of the carrier strike group’s deployment to the Indo-Pacific amid heightened tensions with China in the region.

The jets are operated by the renowned 617 Squadron, also known as the ‘Dambusters’ squadron.

Seeing the sights! The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall during a visit to the Great Sphinx of Giza, on the third day of their tour of the Middle East

The sights are worth seeing! On the third day in their Middle East tour, The Prince of Wales (and The Duchess) of Cornwall visited the Great Sphinx at Giza.

The Prince of Wales was dashing in a blue pin-striped suit that he paired it with a matching white shirt, blue tie, and pocket square.

Charles visited Cairo before, privately. Camilla however has not been there before. Both royals seemed awestruck by their guide’s explanation of 4,500 years worth history.

After carefully walking up steps, they reached the Pyramid of Cheops (454ft) and entered the tunnel.

Ashraf Mohi, the director of Pyramid Complex, led the couple to all three pyramids as well as the Great Sphinx. He told them: ‘You are stepping on rocks that go back centuries and centuries. This is an adventure.’

A royal wonder of the world! Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall (pictured) were all smiles as they arrived at the Great Pyramid of Giza in Cairo on the first day of their Egypt tour

This is a royal marvel of the globe! The Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Charles were smiling as they reached the Great Pyramid of Giza, Cairo’s first day of their Egypt trip.

He pointed out the pyramid and explained that it had once been covered with flat limestone. He said: ‘If you imagine in another time, it looked so shiny.’

The couple also took a photo of themselves in front the Great Sphinx, which was impassive. While on their four day tour of the Middle East, the prince wanted to show his wife the location.

For the first 15 years, this was the first visit of Prince Charles to Cairo. The site was visited by Princess Diana in 1992.

Built 4,500 years ago, the Great Pyramids of Giza are one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.  Khufu is the tallest structure in the world at 146 metres (481ft). The two-million bricks that make up the Great Pyramid of Giza are each 50 tonnes in weight.

Millions of tourists visit the Sphinx every year, which is 73 metres long. In pre-Covid times around 4,000 British tourists visited Egypt’s tourist destinations weekly.

The couple’s visit to Egypt, which will continue tomorrow, will highlight close links with the UK and comes just weeks after the future King’s appearance at COP26 in Glasgow.

A source close to Charles said: ‘The Prince is convinced that human ingenuity can help stop climate change because when you look at the pyramids you realise just what people can do.’

Yesterday, when they arrived in Cairo, Gareth Bayley OBE (Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Egypt) and Sara Fawcett, their wife, greeted the prince and duchess.

The President of Egypt Abdel Fattah el-Sisi greeted the royal guests at the palace’s entry. Entissar Amer and Entissar Amer took photos before the group headed for a talk room. Meanwhile, the prince and host had their meeting for about 40 minutes.

Retired field marshal, the Egyptian leader was responsible for overthrowing Egypt’s first democratically elected president, Islamist President Mohamed Morsi. This occurred in 2013 after mass protests against Morsi’s rule.

The president was then an army general and announced to the nation that Mr Morsi had been reelected from his office because he had not fulfilled ‘the hope of a national consensus’.

This was followed by an arrest of those opposed to Mr Morsi being ousted. Human rights groups claim that this led to the death of many during protests.

Later, the Duchess of Cornwall went barefoot as she and the Prince of Wales visited the Al Alzar mosque in Cairo.

Prince Charles also encouraged Egyptian youth to focus on what they share, and not what is dividing them. While visiting Cairo’s Al Alzar mosque, the Prince spoke to students about the importance of focusing on common beliefs among faiths. He stated, “We have so much in common,”

After landing in Cairo the Prince of Cornwall and the Duchess Of Cornwall visited Al Azhar Mosque, taking in its stunning architecture and taking photos in the central courtyard.

They were accompanied by Dr Samy Fawzy (Archbishop of Anglican Province of Alexandria), and the Grand Imam Sheikh Ahmed El-Tayeb.

The Prince was invited to an interfaith reception at the Abassa Room of the mosque after the Duchess left Cairo for her programme. He was accompanied by his entourage and said to have been in deep conversation with Grand Imam.
