Emmerdale ’embroiled in race probe after claims actress’ accent was mimicked by two co-stars on set’

Emmerdale was reportedly subject to a race probe after two co-stars claimed that Emmerdale’s mixed-race actress had imitated her accent.

The Sun reported that an unidentified actress in soap was upset by an inappropriate comment she received before her accent was ridiculed on set of ITV’s Yorkshire-based soap.

It comes as leading Emmerdale stars Matthew Wolfenden and Isabel Hodgins continue to be absent from screen following a ‘heated on-set row’, with both stars said to not be returning to screens until 2022.

The publication reports that Matthew, 41, who plays David Metcalfe and Isabel, 27, who portrays Victoria Sugden, are facing claims that the mixed-race actress’ accent was mimicked.

Both stars – who joined the soap in 2006 – have categorically denied all allegations and have suggested that the whole thing is a misunderstanding.

Both actors have been suspended from the ITV soap but they haven’t filmed any scenes since September.

It is also reported that following the alleged incident, Matthew is said to have rowed with co-star Aaron Anthony, who plays Ellis Chapman in the Dales. 

Sources said that Matthew and Isabel have stopped filming because of a complaint. 

‘This all came about after a conversation between them and another actress — during which the alleged remark was made. 

‘An accusation was also made that the actress’s accent had been mimicked.’

Sources said that Matthew had later spoken with Aaron and then that they were having a “tense conversation” and added that Isabel stopped filming after that.

An insider said that emotions had been high on set ever since the incident. Cast members were unsure what to believe.

Meanwhile, it’s said that the female cast member at the centre of the race row is continuing to film ‘as normal’, though she wishes she ‘wasn’t entangled in it.’

The publication reports that the ‘issue is far from solved’ and as two of Emmerdale’s biggest stars their sudden absence from set have cause major ‘production issues’.

Both Matthew and Isabel were embroiled in the soap’s huge Super Soap Week stunt last month, where their characters had plunged into fast-flowing rapids after the rope bridge collapsed.

Victoria, despite Isabel being a troubled character, was saved by Meena Jutla (Paige Sandhu).

This has resulted in scripts being “hastily revised” which caused confusion among dedicated viewers.

Drama: Since Isabel and Matthew have both left, scripts were ‘hastily revised’. This has created some confusion for committed viewers.

The bosses were said to have planned for the big storyline to remain ‘prominent.’ However, with the characters not being onscreen for ‘an unknown period of time,’ it presented a challenge for scriptwriters.

The pair were last seen onscreen on October 28, with the onscreen lovers heading off to visit Victoria’s stepmother Diana Blackstock in Portugal. 

It comes after it was reported that Matthew and Isabel won’t return to screens until 2022 following their on-set row,. 

Although both actors have returned to Harewood, the filming of the soap took place six weeks before airtime. This means that neither actor will be appearing in Christmas storieslines.

Matthew and Isabel clashed during filming new scenes with Aaron Anthony. The cast were also shooting dramatic scenes at Stockton-on-Tees waterfalls in preparation for an episode.

The Sun was told by a source: “It’s very unlikely that Matthew (and Isabel) will return to screen before Christmas.” [as]They have just recently returned to Emmerdale, which is six weeks ahead of Emmerdale’s filming schedule. Their return date for Emmerdale will be January.

He added, “It was disappointing for the bosses as well as the scriptwriters but they understood that appropriate inquiries needed to be made.”

MailOnline reached Matthew through his representative, but he declined to comment.

Isabel’s representatives are also available for comment.

Sources said that it was unlikely that Matthew or Isabel would be seen again before Christmas. [as]The set has just been returned by them.

According to the source, neither actor was suspended from filming.

Emmerdale addressed their absence last week, when Emmerdale reported that the characters had traveled to Portugal in order to visit Diane Sugden’s home.

Matthew and Isabel were previously  said to have fallen out while filming a soap scene which involved a dramatic stunt.

According to The Sun, a source said that it left many people uncomfortable at filming. It was quite heated.

The actors could be seen snuggling up in an Instagram photo shared earlier this year, which suggests that their feud may have ended.

Matthew Webb’s wife Charley shared a picture of them chatting on social media. She captioned the photo: “The most irritating humans” and added a heartfelt message.

Isabel responded to Charley’s Instagram Stories photo with the following: “We love you too, hun @miss_charleywebb” while Matthew said they were: “BFFS!”

Isabel shared also a picture of Matthew playing on the ground with his pet dog.
