Speaking on Dax Shepard and Monica Padman’s podcast, Armchair Expert, Gwyneth explained that she nearly died during the dramatic labour.

She said, “I had two caesareans. My daughter was an emergency, it almost killed us. It was almost unbearable.

“Anyway, there’s an enormous scar across your body, and you’re just like, oh my god, that wasn’t there before.” You don’t think it’s bad, or that you want to judge it, but it’s just that you are like, ‘Oh my God.’

Gwyneth also criticised social media for creating unrealistic expectations regarding female beauty. This included the idea of a woman having ‘washboard abs’ within days of giving birth.

She said that she was thankful for Instagram, as it allowed her to share the following: “Thank goodness there wasn’t Instagram when we had our babies. Now it’s like when I see someone, “Oh I just had a baby two weeks ago and have a completely bloated stomach,” and I’m like wow, that’s not how I feel. [looked like]?.

“And like great,” more power to the lady who uses the washboard [abs] but that is totally the exception and then now we’re being fed all of these other images of what we’re supposed to look like all the time — babies, no babies, whatever.’

“I feel like we also have this strange thing around, past perfectionionism, it seems like I can accomplish this gargantuan job that’s beyond human. Why? What’s the point?
