Here’s the touching moment that a 93-year old man who was receiving end-of-life care was surprised by an impromptu concert of jazz in his front yard.
Dick Hockridge’s family had posted a social media appeal asking for help to stage a performance for the pensioner, a big fan of big band and jazz music living in Tyne and Wear in Sunderland.
Kelly Scott from BBC Radio Newcastle saw it and received many responses.
Just two days later the radio station helped organise the concert, with pianist Mark Deeks and singer Jennifer Hastings singing to Dick and his wife of 60 years, Agnes, with a garden performance they could enjoy from the comfort of their front room.
They performed some songs that the couple has danced to together throughout the years, including one of their favourites Moon River.
Mark Deeks (pianist) and Jennifer Hastings (singer), performed for Dick Hockridge at his Sunderland garden, in Tyne and Wear. After his family appealed to musicians online,

Dick, an old shipyard worker could be seen singing as he sat at the window while neighbours and emotional family members watched.
Jennifer Hastings, singer said that it was a rainbow full of emotions. It seemed like Dick could not believe it.
“This is the thing that really means everything. Although I have a lot of Christmas parties and weddings to attend, it was a joy to be able to perform for my family at this event.
“I get emotional thinking about it. While I may have done other emotional gigs, it will remain in my memories for the rest my life.
Moon River, their most loved song, was sang by the singer during an emotional concert
Dick was able to manage a few words after the concert. He declared: “Merry Christmas, and a Happy Year to Everyone in the Whole Wide World.” Peace be with You. We are grateful.
Last week, Helen Wilson, who is married to Dick’s grandson tweeted: ‘I’ve a close relative who is at end of life care, & a huge fan of jazz/big band music. Although I would love to organize a recital at home, my current playing skills are not up to the task. Do you know of any NE piano players who might offer such a service?’.
After the event, she stated that “I never imagined it would explode like this.”
They will treasure the beautiful moments they have listened to on ‘BBC Radio Newcastle’ for as long as he is alive. You’re all superstars!’
Helen Wilson is the wife of Dick’s great-grandson and she posted her original request. After the concert, Kelly was thanked profusely by Kelly on social media.
Kelly, Radio Newcastle’s presenter said that Kelly was overwhelmed by the number of musicians who offered to play for her family.
‘I can’t believe the response to this,’ she said.
“We could fill the garden with entertainers ten times as many with all of the offers. Everybody has given the family such love.
“We are all about making a difference at BBC Radio Newcastle and being able to make this possible for Dick and his loved ones and give them such an unforgettable moment feels truly special.
Jennifer (pictured), who sang for Dick said that the concert would remain in her mind for all her lives.
Agnes and Dick became emotional as the musicians played for them in their own home.
