Honda owners with older cars are puzzled after their clocks got stuck in 2002, 20 years ago.
The issue seems to have affected Honda vehicle owners from 2004 through 2012. Several people took to social media to voice their dismay, as well as Honda forums.
This problem appears to be limited to model equipped with navigation systems. The clock switches from 2002 to 2022 every time an engine is started.
Honda UK stated to MailOnline that they are currently looking into the matter and will advise customers to get in touch with their dealers if the issue is still present.
Honda US told the CR-V Owners Club forum that it was unlikely there would be a fix until August 2022, after which point it would ‘auto-correct’ back to 2022.
Honda owners with older Honda vehicles have been baffled after an error in technology caused their clocks to display the year 2002 instead of 20.
Honda hasn’t revealed which models have been affected. However, social media users suggested that the 2008 CR-V (pictured above) might be among those experiencing clock problems.
Customers across the US, Canada and UK have also reported similar issues. These customers have attributed their problems to everything from GPS malfunctioning to an inability to use the system.
This issue was first published on January 1. The clock was set to change from 2021 to 20,22 but it instead went back to 2002.
The clock of the navigation system was not resetable by users who tried to reset it.
MailOnline was informed by a spokesperson from Honda UK that they are aware of an issue with the clock function in certain Honda models.
“We are still investigating the matter to find the right countermeasure. We encourage all affected customers to reach out to their Honda dealer while we wait.
A spokesperson for the organization stated, “Currently investigating the issue to decide possible countermeasures. We do not have additional information to share.”
Some customers have received better service from Honda US. Honda US stated that they had escalated the NAVI Clock Issue with their Engineering Team. This team informed them that the issue will be present from January 2022 to August 2022. After this time, it will automatically correct itself.
“Please rest assured, we’ll continue to monitor the situation and inform you when a solution is possible.”
User bobdivepros said on the CR-V owners club forum that when trying to change the time it beeps, but doesn’t make any adjustments.
All my radio presets remain intact and the navigation seems to be functioning fine. My local Honda dealer called me and said I was the third one calling today about the same issue.
User masseur also posted on the CRV forum: “Both of our 2009 and 2012 Honda CRVs have the exact same problem with their clocks showing the wrong time. This glitch is affecting us in the UK, and we have not been able to find a fix at our Honda dealership/garage.
Twitter users have also reported issues with their Honda clocks, including J-Triumf, who tweeted: ‘I was wondering why my car’s clock has been acting weird these past few days, apparently it’s a widespread issue with Honda navigation units.’
Cyber Security Times speculates that it might be caused by the Y2K22 virus, which led to problems with Microsoft Exchange and the freezing of emails. This was fixed.
Microsoft Exchange 2016 servers and 2019 servers make use of a malware scanning engine. It uses a signature file that stores dates in the 32 bit integer format int32.
For a minute after midnight on January 1, 2022, the largest number of dates that could be saved in 32 bits was 2147483647.
Honda customers have been asking for a solution and taking to social media, reporting the problem to Honda directly
Some users suggested that the problem could be related to larger integer values needed for 2022. Sumner Hushing was one of these users, and he called it “time-critical”.
This exceeded the limit of int32, which led to time validation errors on Exchange servers that caused mail to not be sent.
Microsoft immediately released a solution in the form a script file. This tricked Microsoft’s server into believing it was December 33rd, 2021. But the software giant plans to continue working on a more long-term fix.
Honda isn’t confirming or denying that Honda vehicles are affected. Honda also doesn’t know how date information is stored in its entertainment systems.
According to some experts, Honda’s claim that it will be fixed by August would make the Y2K22 Bug unlikely.
It seems that time inside the vehicle resets when it starts. This can happen at any hour, depending on what model you have.
Honda states that it is currently working to fix the problem by August 2022.
