COP26 president Alok Sharma criticised plans for a new ‘meat tax’ yesterday – despite revealing he has now given up eating it to help save the environment.
Cabinet Minister Mr Sharma stated that he was against the introduction of a new levy for meat and dairy products. His comments came after Environment Secretary George Eustice indicated his support yesterday for the new tax.
According to reports, the government is currently working on a new tax system to tax the food sector that contributes the most to global warming.

After Environment Secretary George Eustice yesterday had indicated his support for the new tax, his remarks were made.
However, Mr Sharma said to The Mail that Sunday’s issue on tax and spending was for the Chancellor.
“At last, we should be encouraging people and not forcing them to go in one direction.”
Mr Sharma, father-of-two, revealed that he had given up eating meat.
He explained, “The reason I gave up eating meat is because my younger sister, who became vegetarian a few years ago, was very focused on environmental issues and basically said to me when she got this job, “What are you going to do for our environment?”
