Jamie Cullum has revealed he finally started piano lessons during lockdown.

The jazz pianist and singer, who has sold 10million albums, said he originally learnt to play ‘instinctively’ but had been inspired by his wife – the former model Sophie Dahl – and their two daughters studying piano online in January.

Cullum, 42 years old, said to BBC Headliners Podcast: ‘I got into touch with a professor and started taking harmony and piano lessons. 

“It’s obsession, and I do all of my research. It’s a great way to learn.

Jamie Cullum, who originally wanted to learn piano ‘instinctively’ has now revealed that he started lessons at lockdown.

He said that the only thing that was ‘frustrating” about not starting to study sooner was realising that’some’ of what he’d been doing for many years was just a little better. 

“Sometimes, you only have to move one note to the right and you suddenly get a legitimately rich chord.”

Nihal Arthanayake, podcast host, said that Cullum had just started taking lessons and would “surprise many people.”

Cullum stated that he was able to describe the basics of his work instinctively, and in a moment of confusion.
