The Liberal Democrats achieved the biggest by-election swing against a government in 28 years

Liberal Democrats won the largest swing against a government since 1928.

After the passing of the Conservative MP in the House, the Liberal Democrat Candidat Diana Maddock transformed a Tory majority with more than 23,000 members into a Lib Dem majority with over 16,000 members.

In 1997, the seat was won by the Tories.

Historical records do not contain by-elections in which the same person retained their seats as a member or a candidate of another party.

Douglas Carswell, a Tory MP and defectionist in the Clacton By-Election of 2014, won with an average swing 44%.

The 34.1 per cent swing from the Tories to the Lib Dems in North Shropshire gave newly-elected Helen Morgan a majority of nearly 6,000
