Jeremy Corbyn condemns Keir Sterner’s plan for opening Labour party conference with God Save The King.

Jeremy Corbyn denounced Labour leader KeirStarmer’s plans to have the party perform the national anthem at the annual conference.

According to Mr Corbyn, the idea for party members singing God Save The King during the conference in Liverpool was “very odd”.

An ex-leader of Labour Party suggested that the song was too patriotic.

Keir Sterner and other party chiefs made the decision to sing the National Anthem at Labour Conference for the first time ever in Labour’s history, following the death and accession of King Charles III and earlier this month the death and burial of the Queen.

However, Jeremy Corbyn argued the move was unnecessary. He said on Nick Robinson’s Political Thinking podcast: ‘They’ve never done it before, there’s never been any demand to do it.

‘We don’t as a country routinely go around singing the national anthem at every single event we go to.

‘We don’t sing in schools, we don’t have the raising of the flag as they do in the USA and other places.

‘We are not that sort of, what I would call, excessively nationalist.’

Keir Starmer was at the Queen’s funeral on Monday, and paid respect to Britain’s longest-serving monarch.

He declared that Elizabeth II’s passing “marked an end to an era”.

He said: “The dignity, courage and spirit Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth I displayed throughout her reign, will always be with me.

“We’re lucky to be called Elizabethans.”

A few days after the death of Queen Elizabeth, Labour’s leader is likely to inaugurate the conference as a tribute.
