Recently, I realized how difficult it was to find your own style by simply choosing a pair white trainers.

In this frenetic world, people often try to glitter and sticker me – and I really have to stand my ground. As with those trainers. At a press event to launch a new range, the brand’s designer asked me and a few others to choose a pair and decorate them as we saw fit.

My selection – a simple white pair that would go beautifully with my tailored wool trousers – delighted me but wasn’t too popular with everyone else. It meant that I had to decline the glittery Cinderella-esque laces, the bright laces and the chance to add a quote across my sole.

In a room full of ‘maximum’, I felt under pressure to conform. But more and more over recent years, I’ve forsaken fuss and frills in favour of a minimalist approach to dressing: buying less and buying better – investing in pieces that will go the distance. Although it may seem boring to some, I believe that less is more.

And not everything needs to be drenched in glitter to shine – although I do make one big exception: I love a sequin for party season. My love affair began in November.

I’m hoping that this year we’ll all have more invitations to enjoy after 2020’s grim trudge from kitchen to living room. How does a minimalist dresser like myself tackle this time of the year when sparkle is de rigueur Here are my top tips…

1You can embrace the positive glimmer of sparkles in dresses, tops and skirts this season, from micro to major. My favourite is a simple sequin in its purest form – in either white, black or gold.

2 For a simple yet effective party look, pair a white blazer and dark leather trousers with your favorite heels. Add a touch of dazzle with glittering accessories such as a sequined handbag or diamanté jewellery or shoes.

3 A minimalist shift dress with knee-high boots is a winning combo. Accessorize with a bolt or gold for a festive twist.

4Pairing high-waist trousers with a top with a sheer neckline or sleeve will add sensuality.

5 Finally, this year I’ll be succumbing to the allure of feathers. Think Amal Clooney’s knockout plumed look at this month’s London Film Festival – OK, maybe not as fancy as that, but you get the idea of how good a feathered friend can look.
