Fighting back tears, Kate vowed to Piers in his final episode of Life Stories that she will ‘never give up’ on Derek after his 13-month battle in hospital – the longest of any surviving Covid patient.

Derek was admitted to hospital after the virus caused severe damage throughout his body. This included kidney failure, liver disease, and pancreatic cancer.

His heart stopped repeatedly, and he was treated for pneumonia. He also had to fight infections that caused his lungs to burst.

Kate produced a documentary that chronicled the experience, and it won a National Television Award in Best Authored Documentary.

A follow-up documentary will now be made, documenting the life of Derek and his family since Derek returned home.

Although the exact release date has yet to be confirmed, the film will be shown on ITV in the winter.

Kate wrote The Power Of Hope, a book that describes the entire journey.

Opening up: She told her former co-host: 'There is no way of knowing what the future is and in the meantime, it's a strange thing Piers...'
