Kevin Spacey, an actor in disrepute, has been ordered by the arbitrator to pay $31 million in damages and legal fees to House of Cards producer. Spacey was found to have violated Netflix’s sexual harassment policy.
Although the arbitration was held behind closed doors in 2013, it became public after MRC, the production company, filed a petition at the Los Angeles Superior Court seeking confirmation of the award. Variety reported that the confidential appeal had been upheld.
According to MRC’s petition, after eight days of arbitration, Spacey was found guilty by the arbitrator.

In the document, it was also noted that Spacey had committed a number of breaches of contract.
The two-time Academy Award winner and his companies, M. Profitt Productions and Trigger Street Productions, were ordered to pay $29.5million in damages, $1.2million in attorneys’ fees and $235,000 in costs associated with the arbitration.
Spacey (62) starred as President Frank Underwood, an ambitious and ruthless politician, until he was fired in fall 2017 after a series of allegations of sexual misconduct.
Spacey was accused in inappropriate touching of a male production assistant. This created an allegedly toxic atmosphere on the set.
Multiple sources told The Hollywood Reporter that Spacey had allegedly groped the PA who was responsible for driving Spacey to the hospital following an injury to his hand while filming a promo shoot.
According to reports, the assistant complained about it to his superiors later. The assistant is also said to have groped an actor trying to audition.
Spacey was 26, at the time Anthony Rapp, who was the star in the Broadway original production of Rent, also publicly accused Spacey. Rapp was 14 years old when Spacey was 26.
Spacey is accused by over 20 men of inappropriate conduct, from touching to suggestive comments. All allegations of misconduct have been denied by Spacey.
Spacey’s expulsion from House of Cards was at the same time that two seasons of Season 6 were being produced and the majority of the expected 13-episode Season had already been completed.
Spacey violated the terms of his contract for producing and acting by engaging in sexual harassment, and was removed from the show.
In January 2019, MRC demanded a confidential arbitration in order to recoup Spacey’s and his companies’ tens of million dollars spent on rewriting House of Cards. This season starred Robin Wright and Michael Kelly.
Spacey filed a counterclaim accusing MRC improperly terminating his contract for allegedly making exaggerated claims about sexual misconduct or assault.
Spacey claimed that MRC still owed Spacey money in his claim.

Rapp, Spacey’s initial accuser, sued him last year in federal court. This case remains pending.

Spacey claimed that he didn’t remember scaling Rapp in 2017, but apologised if the claims were true. Spacey used this statement also to declare that he was gay.
Several other cases against the actor have unraveled, including a criminal case in Massachusetts alleging assault and battery against Spacey, who was accused of groping an 18-year-old man at a bar on the resort island of Nantucket in 2016.
After invoking his Fifth Amendment right to withhold testimony about texts messages from the night prior to the alleged groping, the defence claimed that they were deleted.
Spacey was cleared of all charges in Los Angeles after the murder of his accused, a Masseuse.

In Britain, the Metropolitan Police investigated six claims of sexual assault and assault against Spacey, who ran London’s Old Vic Theatre between 2004 and 2015. The police have not yet said if they would bring criminal charges.
In May 2021, a New York judge ruled that a man accusing Spacey of sexually abusing him in the 1980s when he was 14 cannot proceed only as ‘C.D.’ In a federal suit.
