Following the Christmas Day Attack in Tyne and Wear on Christmas Day, Man (34 years old) is accused of murder

  • Simon Birch, 39 from Sunderland, succumbed to his injuries after being stabbed.
  • Adam Jenkins (34), of Sunderland Road in Newbottle is being charged with the crime. 
  • According to police, the suspect was taken into custody ‘in a very short period’ following the incident.

Following a Christmas Day attack, a man has been arrested for murder.

Northumbria Police identified the victim as Simon Birch (39), a Sunderland man who was killed in an attack using a knife on Saturday at 11:20 PM.

It took place at Sunderland Road Newbottle Tyne and Wear.

Northumbria Police spokesperson said that Simon Birch, 39, of Sunderland was found with serious injuries consistent with being caused by a bladed item.

“Despite all efforts of paramedics he tragically died at the scene.”

According to the force, family liaison officers are working alongside Mr Birch’s loved ones in support of them.

The suspect was quickly arrested and taken into police custody.

Adam Jenkins, aged 34, from Sunderland Road (Newbottle), has been accused of murder. He was scheduled to appear in Newcastle Magistrates Court on Monday.

Northumbria Police detective Inspector Graeme Barr stated: “Our thoughts and prayers remain with Simon’s family. We would request that their privacy be respected during this horrible time.”

According to the statement, “All parties believed to know each other. There is no larger threat to public safety.”
