A disturbing video has been released showing the moment that a reveller was knocked unconscious, and then left to lie on tram tracks in a sickening attack. 

Police have opened an investigation into the brutal attack on Melbourne’s bustling Chapel Street in early Sunday morning.

Police said that the incident occurred shortly after officers intervened in an altercation involving a Glen Iris man (26), and a group up to six men shortly before 2.30am.

They separated the man from the group before tensions between the two parties  escalated again a short time later.

The wild brawl reached Chapel Street in Prahran, and the man was hit with several punches and a kick to the head.

The street was jam-packed with late-night revellers. 

As the man is being thrown to the ground, one bystander can be heard cheering.

His attacker can be seen still punching the victim as he laid unconscious on the tram tracks before fleeing the scene.

Passers-by who were shocked rushed to help the injured man and stayed with them for an hour while they waited for paramedics. 

Husnian Shafique, a witness, said that it was a hard punch.

The man sustained serious injuries when he was rushed to Alfred Hospital.

He was released from the hospital Before police were able get a statement from him. 

The alleged attacker was wearing an unusual hooded black jacket. He fled the scene on foot, heading towards Malvern Road.
