Manhunt launched for 54-year-old convicted killer who ran from HMP Leyhill, an open prison in Gloucestershire.

After escaping from an open prison, a convicted killer who strangled his victim with a belt is the focus of a police investigation.

Marcus Coates, 54, a man with a lot of tattoos was serving a sentence at HMP Leyhill, Tortworth, Gloucestershire, for manslaughter. 

Coates, who was in jail in 2012, was last seen on Thursday night near Bristol’s bus stop. 

Avon and Somerset Police have warned people to avoid him and call 999 immediately. 

Coates has connections to London and Kent. He is described as having’mousey’ brown hair and several tattoos.

According to the force, his tattoos include his name and rose on his left hand, a heart with ‘West Ham FC’ on the right arm, and a female’s name across each of his knuckles.

A police spokesperson stated that the suspect was last seen at Bristol Bus Station between 8.30-9.30am Thursday 28 October wearing a blue shirt, blue jacket and blue jeans as well as grey Puma sneakers, according to the CCTV image.
