MI6 Chief warns that the next decade could see a major tech revolution, which could threaten world order

  • Richard Moore (58), head of MI6 says tech revolutions are likened to the industrial revolution
  • Major threat to the world order could be created by speech revolution
  • MI6 needs to embrace challenge in its culture and ethos

According to MI6’s head, a technological revolution in the next decade could pose major threats to the global order.

Richard Moore predicts that far-reaching improvements in communications and computers, along with increased use of artificial Intelligence, will alter our lives in ways no one can foresee.

The chief of MI6 – the Secret Intelligence Service – will use a landmark speech to set out the dangers of failing to respond to the pace of technological change.

Moore, now 58 years old, was elected Chief (or ‘C’) in October 2020. He will be comparing such technological advancements to the industrial revolution of 18th and 19th century.

According to Moore, the challenge calls for a sea-change in MI6’s culture, ethos and culture. Mr Moore says that the UK’s spy agencies need to become less secretive and more openly partner with the private sector. A draft of his speech was released last night. He stated that technology’s disruptive effects were ‘a hot focus for MI6.

He added: “Advancements made in quantum engineering, engineered biology and other technologies will transform entire industries.

The huge amounts of data that are now accessible around the globe combined with increasing computing power and developments in data science will allow for the integration of artificial Intelligence (AI) into virtually every area of our day to-day lives.

‘Others would speak to you about the benefits associated with these new discoveries… but I am paid to look at the threat side of the ledger. MI6 is a global organization that deals with the real world, and not what we wish it would be.
