After a claim by a mother at a Michigan school board meeting, a district denies that litter boxes were provided for students who identified as furries last month.
Video of the woman, Lisa Hansen, has since gone viral, racking up hundreds of thousands of views on conservative social media pages and even being shared by a state Republican Party official.
“So, yesterday I learned that at least one school has, in one the unisex bathroom – a litterbox for children who identify themselves as cats. That is really disturbing to me. She said that she would continue to investigate the matter and told the Midland Public Schools Board of Education on December 20.
Superintendent Michael E. Sharrow claimed that it was “unconscionable” that he was forced to address the matter in an email addressed to parents, which was posted on Facebook.
“Let’s be very clear about this communication. There is no truth whatsoever to this false statement/accusation! Sharrow claimed that litter boxes have never existed in schools affiliated with MPS.

A Michigan school district is denying that it provided litter boxes to student who identify as ‘furries’ after Lisa Hansen, above, said they did at a school board meeting last month

Midland Public Schools claimed that the email sent by Midland Public Schools to parents contained no truth and was shared on Facebook.

Scientists who study furries say that people are able to ‘create ananthropomorphized animals characters (fursonas) for themselves, which they can identify with.

Hansen stated that she had heard of a school keeping a litterbox, above in a bathroom unisex, to please a student’s sexual identity
Hansen looked confused as she spoke to officials from the district school, located about an hour north of Flint.
“I still have a lot of questions about this. Yesterday, I heard something that shocked me. Today I’m equally surprised and upset. She was furious, and she even used that word.
‘I want to talk about the fact that – and I know that this is going on nationwide, so it’s not just for this board – but the community needs to understand that the agenda that is being pushed through our schools is – just my opinion – but somewhat nefarious when it comes to some of the activities.
Let’s discuss furries. It was addressed by a child a couple months ago that they’re put in an environment where there are kids that identify as a fury – a cat or a dog or whatever.
“So, yesterday I learned that at least one school has in its unisex bathroom a mailbox for children who identify themselves as cats. This is really disturbing. I’ll do further investigation.

She did not receive a reply from the Midland Public Schools Board of Education.

Hansen’s comments were spread on social media by conservative pages and Michigan Republican Party Co-Chair Meshawn Maddock
Furries are people who identify themselves as furries. They ‘create an anthropomorphized animal character (fursona), with which they can identify and function within the community,” FurScience says. This website is run by scientists that study furries.
“Some furries dress up in elaborate paraphernalia, such as animal ears and tails or portray themselves as anthropomorphic creatures on online communities like Second Life.
According to this website, more than 75% of furries are younger than 25 years old. Approximately 84 percent are female and 83.2 percent are black.

DailyMail.com asked Maddock to comment but he didn’t immediately reply.
According to the website, “Contrary stereotypes that paint the fandom simply as a fetish,” the main draw of furry fandom are its sense of belongingness and recreation as well as its appreciation for anthropomorphic stories and art.
Hansen’s remarks drew cheers from some of the audience, but school board representatives did not reply to Hansen.
The school does not know if the mother is also a parent.
This month, video of the meeting started spreading via social media.

Michigan Republican Party co-chair Meshawn Maddock reposted this video on Thursday. She wrote that “furries” are children who use the bathroom. Parents heroes WILL TAKE BACK schools.

Midlands Superintendent Michael E. Sharrow said: ‘There is no truth whatsoever to this false statement/accusation! There were never litter bins in MPS schools.
Maddock claimed that she signed a document giving Donald Trump 16 Electoral College votes in Michigan at a conservative meeting last week. This despite the fact that President Joe Biden had won the state with 150,000 votes.
According to CBS News, she stated that “We fought for the seats of the electors,” referring to her and Matt Maddock (state Representative).
The Trump campaign demanded that we perform this task. That’s why I am under intense scrutiny today.
DailyMail.com asked Maddock to comment, but he did not reply immediately.
Superintendent Sharrow made it clear to his parents that the false message/accusation was “gaining momentum in the social media arena.”
He denied Hansen’s claims completely.
“It is so disappointing that I felt it was necessary to convey this message.
This is a divisive/contentious time in our world. I’d like to ask you to let me know if there are any wild allegations that do not sound like things in which the Midland Public Schools Board of Education, Administration, or District might be involved.
