Miss America 2021 was criticized by angry viewers because of its “terrible” production, sliding ratings, and elimination of the swimsuit round.

Unimpressed viewers attacked the competition on social media, claiming it was a “dumpster fire” in terms productions. They claimed that it felt like watching a “botched rehearsal”. 

During Thursday night’s finale, Emma Broyles, Miss Alaska, claimed the centennial crown and a $100,000 college scholarship at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. 

It took five days for the contest to conclude. Miss Alaska was the winner of a 51-strong field of contestants representing all 50 states as well the District of Columbia. 

The much-anticipated finale was the 100th anniversary of the competition. However, viewers weren’t impressed and blasted it as a fail.

Emma Broyles (Miss Alaska) won Thursday’s final and the $100,000 college scholarship from the Mohegan-Sun Arena in Uncasville.

The contest took place over five days and Miss Alaska topped a field of 51 contestants, representing the 50 states and the District of Columbia, to win over the crowd

This criticism is coming after contestants were no longer required to wear evening dresses and the swimsuit round was eliminated.

It also experienced its own #MeToo scandal in late 2017, while TV audiences dropped to an all-time low of 4.3million people in 2018.

Disappointed viewers criticized the contest’s “embarrassing” production value and the ending of the program before Miss America, the new Miss America, was presented with a bouquet or performed the famous walk.

One individual wrote, “Are you watching the broadcast? Or is it a botched rehearsal?”

Another tweet: “No flowers, no walks, this is a great wrap-up of #MissAmerica’s most embarrassing production.”

A third participant added, “I feel terrible for the contestants tonight.

“They are deserving so much better than this horrible broadcast, particularly for the 100th anniversary. 

“I’ve never seen a worse production of a movie in my entire life!” It’s so cringey it’s difficult to watch.

A fourth fumed, “I thought that this was a beauty contest.” Are there evening dresses and a swimsuit? Voting for TikTok videos or screeching violins?

One fifth said: I will defend Miss America (with an open mind on its deficiencies) till my death. But this production is a mess! It is a shame for these candidates. 

Many viewers complained that the swimsuit round had been discontinued. It was taken out of 2018 in order to increase inclusion.  

Many viewers were critical of everything, from the sound quality, microphones, and transitions, while some wondered why it didn’t have a primetime television slot.

The most popular competitor has been shown on primetime television, but it was only broadcast this year by NBC’s Peacock. 

The organizers stated that the goal was to attract younger, more wealthy viewers who prefer digital media over traditional TV.

Shantel Krebs (former Miss South Dakota) and the current chief executive officer of Miss America, stated in a statement that she was looking forward to joining the streaming world this year with Peacock to introduce 51 exceptional individuals to a younger audience.

Also, the move comes after a record-breaking slump in viewers and the removal of the swimsuit round due to a surge of women empowerment. 

In 2018, TV viewers fell to 4.3million, an all-time low. The swimsuit round was also eliminated. This number dropped back to 3.6million next year.  

The #MeToo scandal that it experienced in 2017 was its own. In internal emails, sexist remarks were made about some contestants’ weight and appearance.

Miss America It began as an Atlantic City beauty contest in 1921. However, it has evolved to include more than just judging appearances. a new focus on leadership, talent and communication skills.

In 2018, Gretchen Carlson, the chairwoman of the Miss America board of directors, announced that Miss America would ‘no longer judge our candidates on their outward physical appearance’.

After being crowned Miss America Emma Broyles, she reacts to the media.

Carlson stated that Miss America was a competition and not a pageant. They also eliminated the swimsuit section, so contestants no longer had to wear evening dresses.

Instead, contestants will be required to choose any outfit that will make them feel confident and express their individual style. This will also help them show how they intend to advance in the Miss America competition. 

At the time, Carlson said: ‘We’ve heard from a lot of young woman who say, “We’d love to be a part of your program but we don’t want to be out there in high heels and a swimsuit”.

“So you can guess what. You no longer have to do it anymore.”

In place of the swimsuit contest, the judge panel has replaced it with an interactive session in which women can demonstrate their passion, intelligence and understanding of Miss America.

Every year, the event awards millions in college scholarships to winners.
