MTV are reportedly planning on using the event to ‘stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community in Hungary and around the world’ after the country passed a law in June banning content deemed to promote homosexuality and gender change on primtime television.
According to an internal memo obtained by The Hollywood Reporter from Chris McCarthy, the president and CEO at MTV Entertainment Group Worldwide, the decision to hold the ceremony in Hungary was likely to be a surprise for many.
He explained that as a gay man my emotions took over.
“After hearing that this bill was passed, I instinctively thought we should transfer the event to another country.
“But, once my emotions had subsided, I picked up the telephone to contact global LGBTQ+ advocates such as All Out. Got feedback from LGBTQ+ advocates from Hungary. Speak with Raffaele and Bruce, plus other members of the Emerge team.
