One woman is contemplating banning her mother in law after hitting her dog, and calling her granddaughter selfish on Christmas Day.
The unnamed British woman took to Mumsnet to ask for advice after the stressful visit from her mother-in-law, asking if it would be fair to tell her she wouldn’t be invited back if she kept up the behaviour.
The mother-in-law was criticized by fellow users who said they would have kicked the woman out if her dog bit them. Some users suggested the dog shouldn’t jump on anyone, while others said it wasn’t an acceptable reason to hit him.

This woman said that her children informed her of their grandmother’s hitting the dog, and she called her daughter “selfish”.
The mother shared that her 1-year-old dog, which is a medium-sized, got excited to see her mother-in law arrive for Christmas. She jumped up on her and ran over to her.
“He leapt around while MIL was hugging my child and I said to him to stop.
“I turned my head and suddenly, he started sneezing. He does this when he has knocked his nose onto something. She pointed out that the coffee table was her favorite place to sit.
Her children later told her the mother-inlaw had hit her dog.
“She has been a terrible pet owner before, once flinging our kitten of 3 months off off the table as if he were a breadcrumb,” she said.
The mother-in law then accused the ten year-old of being selfish because she refused to wear the Christmas jumper that her father bought her.
She was angry at the comments and told her mother. The mother-in law was confronted by her husband.
She said that her mother in law was a “no-nonsense” woman and “takes no prisoners on any account.” Her dog was not worthy to be killed, she said.
The hostess stated that she had been considering telling her mother in law she would not be invited to any future Christmas parties if her aggressive behavior continued.
Later, she added that her mother in law is “utterly no-nonsense,” old-school, rigid upper lip, and does not take any prisoners.
Many people criticized the mother-inlaw for not allowing the dog to be adopted.
One wrote: ‘No you wouldn’t be unreasonable at all! I’d be fuming at both her comment to your dear daughter as well as hitting your dog. You (or your dear husband ideally) need to tell her it’s unacceptable and she’s not welcome if that’s what she’ll behave like.’
Many people sided with the hostess. Some even said that they would have kicked her out if she hit their dogs.
One stated, “I would not have her back in mine after she was cruel towards the kitten. To be fair,”
If it were me, she would have no food and be gone by the door. However, I tend to be very protective of my pet,” another writer wrote.
Some people, however, said that they wouldn’t like it if the dog leapt on them and suggested that perhaps children exaggerated this.
“Why did you allow your dog to jump on other people?” She could find it disturbing and I find this so offensive. She shouldn’t hit him, but surely she would have gotten help from a dog if hit.
Some said that they didn’t agree with hitting dogs, but suggested the dog need to be trained to not jump on people.
‘I think she probably just pushed him away, which I would have done if a dog jumped on me,’ they went on.
‘I would clarify with the children “how did she hit him?” before doing anything rash,’ another wrote.
“If she had hurt him, he would have been furious.” I don’t know how to push a kitten from a table.
“I don’t like dogs jumping around on me,” she said. One guest wrote that they shouldn’t allow this to happen.
‘I don’t believe in hitting animals but you shouldn’t be letting your dog jump up on people let alone twice. If your dog gets excited by guests (like mine) it should be kept away until it’s calm,’ one said.
‘Mother-in-law was completely out of order so please don’t take this any other way but your dog need to be better trained,’ they went on.
