NatWest customers have complained of being unable to access their accounts online — just hours after HSBC suffered similar problems.

According to Down Detector which monitors website downages, hundreds of users experienced issues shortly before 13.00 BST. 

63% reported issues with online banking; 27% had trouble logging in online; and 10% had problems with mobile banking.  

According to Down Detector London is the most affected. Other cities such as Bristol and Manchester also have issues.

Customers of NatWest have also taken to social networking to vent their frustrations.

One Twitter user shared a screengrab from a broken website page. It said “site cannot be reached” and then added: “Is online banking down?”

Another commented, “Why is the internet banking down?” You are trying to make payments.

NatWest has not yet commented on the problems. 

It comes hours after HSBC’s online banking system crashed this morning, leaving customers unable to access their accounts for around two hours.

Around 9:30 BST, hundreds of users started experiencing problems. 

MailOnline was told by a spokesperson from HSBC that the issue was resolved and that the’service has been stable’ as of Monday morning at 11:30am.

Customers were unable access their accounts today after HSBC’s internet banking system crashed.

MailOnline asked the bank about what caused the relatively brief outage. The spokesperson said that they couldn’t give any details.

‘We have identified the likely root cause in fully recovering the service, but further investigations are underway,’ the spokesperson said. 

Many people took to social media to vent their frustrations, stating that they were having trouble logging in online and through the HSBCnet App. 

One HSBC customer wrote on Twitter: ‘Is HSBCnet broken? We can’t log in!

Another asked: “Is there a problem in HSBCnet today?” I am unable to logon anywhere…’

One user, Christina Sleight, tweeted: ‘Is HSBCnet down?’ 

HSBC had earlier acknowledged the problem, but stated it was only affecting online banking platform HSBCnet. It did not affect retail customers.

A spokesperson for the company stated that some customers had experienced account access problems for less than 30 minutes. Customers may still experience intermittent issues so they will need to retry. These issues are being addressed. 

“We apologise to any inconvenience caused.”

Down Detector receives network status updates via various sources, including social media as well as reports submitted to its website.

Reports began to rise at 9am Monday morning and reached a peak of more than 300 by 10:30am. 

The majority of issues reported – 63 per cent – related to online banking, while a further 31 per cent were specifically about an inability to log in, according to Down Detector. 

At 11:15am, reports had dropped to 28. This coincided with HSBC’s announcement of the resolution.

Down Detector’s heat map’ of user submitted problem reports shows that affected customers are mostly located in major UK cities like London, Manchester, Cardiff, and Belfast.  

Also on Monday, HSBC announced a 74 per cent jump in third quarter profit, allowing it to announce a share buyback of $2 billion. 

The Asia-focused bank posted pretax profit of $5.4 billion for the quarter to September, which compares with $3.1 billion a year prior.
