Moment overtaking car almost hits cyclist, as reckless driver swerves in order to avoid a head-on collision avec a lorry

  • A BMW 3-series almost ran into a cyclist trying to avoid an HGV.
  • Despite the road being marked with solid white lines, the driver tried to overtake.
  • Avon and Somerset Police described the close pass as “one the worst” they had seen
  • Nine penalty points and a £660 fine were given to the driver in court this week

This is the heart-stopping moment a motorist swerved in front of a cyclist to avoid an oncoming lorry.

The cyclist was able to be heard shouting as he narrowly avoided being knocked off his bicycle by Somerset and Avon Police.

Despite the presence of solid white road markings along the single carriageway, the grey BMW 3 series attempts to pass the bike like an approaching HGV.

The three vehicles are only inches apart on the small road in South West England.

Avon Police and Somerset Police referred to it as one the worst close pass reports they have ever received.

The footage was shown several times in court this week to secure a conviction for the motorist.

The driver was convicted, receiving nine penalty points on their licence along with a £660 fine, £66 surcharge and another £110 in costs.

Following the close encounter, the BMW 3-series tears off, leaving the shocked cyclist behind. Justice would later catch up with the reckless driver: this week, a court handed the driver nine points on their licence and a £660 fine

One viewer was stunned and said: “They shouldn’t be on that road.”

Another added: “So close and so dangerous.”

Police are asking anyone involved in such cases reporting the incident to police.

The incident mirrors a similar episode that took place on September 9th, Burton upon Trent (Staffordshire), when a driver nearly struck pedestrians while crossing the A5189.

Despite having’merge in turns’ markings, the car driver overtook HGV at speed and didn’t see pedestrians crossing until last minute.

The car used a right hand filter lane to speed past the truck, before cutting in front of the HGV when it finally saw the pedestrians.

Two people attempted to cross the road but were stopped by the car, one of them narrowly avoiding being hit by it.
