  • EXCLUSIVE: Prince Andrew could lose his constant police protection next month
  • Sources claim that the Met and Home Office have been conducting security reviews on his behalf
  • Andrew is allowed to continue his taxpayer-funded bodyguards

After being exiled from his position as frontline royal, Prince Andrew may lose his 24-hour protection by the police as soon as next month.

The Metropolitan Police and Home Office are conducting an extensive review of his security following the Queen’s last week decision to withdraw her son’s military and charitable affiliations, and forbid him from using his HRH title.

Now, as a US citizen, he will have to defend claims of rape or sexual assault.

Andrew, who remains ninth in line to the throne, has so far been allowed to keep his taxpayer-funded police bodyguards at a cost to the public purse of an estimated £2-3million a year.

It has caused intense public debate because Harry’s nephew, Prince Harry was taken from him by police protection after he quit his job as working royal and moved to America in 2020.

It is understood that the Royal and VIP Executive Committee is now carrying out a review of whether Andrew’s situation is tenable – particularly in light of the Duke of Sussex’s lawyers seeking a judicial review of the Home Office’s decision.

Harry demands that his family be protected by Scotland Yard officers, even though he has to pay for it.

Andrew will enjoy round-the-clock protection from a Royal residence because he lives in the 30-room Royal Lodge, Queen Elizabeth’s Windsor estate.

The security that follows him from the estate is what will be the subject of discussion.

Following public outrage about their globe-trotting ways, officers were regularly following their children on their trips overseas, his daughters, Princess Beatrice, and Princess Eugenie had their official royal security removed several years back.

Although Sarah, the Duchess, is still living with him, she has not been officially provided any security by the government since their divorce in 1996.

While Princess Anne and Prince Edward were granted security measures, other royals such as Zara Tindall or Peter Phillips did not have this same level of protection.

He is now a private citizen, so there won’t be much public interest to provide him more security.

Last night was quiet for the Metropolitan Police and the Home Office. Andrew’s representative would also not be able to comment.

Dai Davies is an ex-head of security for the Royal Scotland Yard. He said about Andrew losing his guards that it was a significant step but there is little risk. There would also be strong arguments against him not needing “PPO”. [personal protection officer]Status if the monarch is not a working one.
