Prince Charles’ goddaughter India Hicks, 54, has admitted she told her adopted son to ditch the jeans and hoodies and ‘start dressing differently’ when travelling with her other children after he was ‘always taken to one side’.
The granddaughter of Earl Mountbatten, 54, who was a bridesmaid at the wedding of Lady Diana Spencer and the Prince of Wales, spoke to Sheerluxe, an online lifestyle magazine, about her adopted son Wesley, 24, and the Black Lives Matter movement.
She said she noticed that when her sons used to travel to the US, for example, ‘it was always Wesley who was taken to one side’.
‘After a while, we recommended Wes start dressing differently – travelling in chinos and a blazer as opposed to jeans and a hoodie seemed to help, if you can believe it. It’s very sad when you think about it,’ she admitted.
Mother-of-five, who described Wesley as a fixture’ within her family of five explained to us that Wesley had been adopted by her. He was eleven years old when his maternal grandmother died from cancer.
India had known him since his two-year-old years. He went to school with Felix, her oldest son. They became great friends.

Earl Mountbatten’s granddaughter, aged 54, was a maid of honor at Lady Diana Spencer’s wedding. She also spoke with Sheerluxe, an online lifestyle magazine about Wesley, 24 and Black Lives Matter. Pictured at The Wallace Collection, London, in 2019.
She admitted that she made a lot of mistakes parenting wise and said her son Conrad advised her to not place Wesley in her guest room upon his arrival so he would feel included.
She explained that Felix was at boarding school, so we agreed Wes could stay in Wes’ room. Even though Felix was away at boarding school, Wes refused to bed in Felix’s bedroom. He preferred to be on the ground on a campbed.
Wesley refused to sleep in Felix’s room, despite the fact that Felix was moving. Instead, Wesley chose to “sleep on an old camp bed” on the ground and declined the invitation to his own bedroom.
India did not understand why her son adopted her. She explained that she had just learned about her adopted son through the Black Lives Matter movement. This revealed the hardships between them and their white relatives.

“It has become a more conscious matter. She said that having her son as a part of our family gave me an insight into the societal issues.
India noticed the inconsistencies in the way Wesley was perceived after realising that Wesley and Amory were often stopped by police and interrogated.
“When Amory, Wesley, or both, used to go to America, Amory would always be on the one side and Amory went straight through. He would wait patiently for his brother’s return from the interview, and would always tell us about how painful it was.
She later remarked on how sad it made her to have to ask Wesley to ‘start dressing differently’ by wearing chinos and a blazer instead of jeans while travelling—and expressed her regret over the fact that it worked.
As young boys, Wesley and Felix shared a bath together. They were brothers long before their official birth, according to the proud mother.
Recently, the granddaughter of Earl Mountbatten was married to David Flint in September.
Emilia Wickstead’s turtle-neck wedding gown with ivory tull, lace, and an A line skirt was worn by the bride for this occasion.
She completed the look with a classic pair of white satin shoes by Louboutin and carried a bouquet by Pulbrook & Gould London.
While many celebrities watched her add a simple lace veil, and drop pearl earrings to the occasion, including Jamie Cullum (jazz singer) and Sophie Dahl (ex-model), who are both granddaughters of Roald and Brooke Shields.
Wesley, her 24-year-old son drove the bride to church. India’s first child, Felix, walked the bride down the aisle.
