Jim Green was NASA’s chief scientist for over 40 years. But as Green said goodbye to NASA on Saturday, he had one final plan: geoengineer Mars so that humans can live there.
To block the sun’s solar energy, the now-retired scientist suggested that the Red Planet be covered in a massive magnetic shield.
Green shared his thoughts with the New York Times. He explained that the protection shield would block the sun from damaging Mars’ atmosphere. This will allow Mars to maintain a climate friendly for humans.
‘Yeah, it’s doable. You can stop the stripping and pressure will only increase. Green stated that Mars will begin terraforming its own.
“The increased temperature and pressure allow you to start the process of growing plants into the soils.”

Retired scientist, Dr. John S. Smith suggested covering the Red Planet with a huge magnetic shield in order to keep it out of the sun’s solar radiations.
In honor of Green’s retirement, the NYT discussed Green’s Mars Plan. However, the ex-NASA official had been at work on the plan since 2017, when it was first made public.
Green spoke at NASA’s Planetary Science Vision 2050 Workshop in Washington DC. He presented models and simulations of how Mars might have a magnetic field. This could help to make Mars more welcoming for humans and communities.
Green said to the workshop that “The solar system belongs to us, so let’s get it,” back in 2017. Green stated that Mars is included in this solar system. However, for us to discover Mars and do science together, it needs a better environmental.
Mars will be enclosed in a magnetotail to help rebuild the atmosphere after it has been destroyed by solar particles. As much as 90 percent of Earth’s atmosphere was removed, the proposed plan.

Jim Green was NASA Chief Scientist for over 40 years. He just retired this Saturday
Mars being blocked from sunlight, it would cause the temperature to rise until the point where CO2 in the polar caps can be sublimated, allowing the atmosphere to increase its greenhouse effect.
This would free up water deep under the surface, which could allow one-seventh to return.
Eventually, the water below would be released.
Green’s plan would help to kickstart this process and “help mitigate some extremes.”
The proposal would create a dipole field –a pair of equal and oppositely charged magnets – in an orbit between Mars and the sun, at a point known as Mars L1.
The ‘artificial magnet field’ placed Mars in a protective’magnetotail’, protecting it against the solar wind.
Mars would not be able to sustain its atmosphere without high-energy particles.

Green spoke with the NYT about his Mars plan to celebrate his retirement. The former NASA official worked on it at least since 2017 when he made it public. The image shows a Mars transformation into an Earth-like world (top).
The simulations demonstrate that in just five years the planet might be able to achieve an Earth-like field.
Green states that raising the pressure will cause the Equator to heat up and lead to the polarcap collapsing.
This would release carbon dioxide, which would turn to gas and begin to fill the atmosphere – and, this would cause the atmosphere to heat up, melting the ice and allowing for the return of liquid water.
The climate would eventually stabilize after a couple years.
Green explained that this was not Terraforming. This is where artificially changing the climate takes place.
‘We let nature do it. That is based on what we now know about physics.
After joining NASA in 1980, Green was officially retired Saturday January 1, 2022.
Green’s science career has focused on the study of the magnetic and electrical fields, as well as low-energy plasma in the solar systems.
Green stated that he is proud of the NASA activities he has participated in.
NASA is in many ways not a job. It is a way to live. The impossible is always possible. It is an incredible thrill for all of us to continue to achieve these things, which is not only important for NASA but also for our nation.
Green uses a scientific approach to make Mars look more Earthlike. Elon Musk, however, has a much more brutal plan.

‘The solar system is ours, let’s take it,’ Green said. ‘And that of course includes Mars. And for humans to be able to explore Mars, together with us doing science, we need a better environment’

Elon Musk is pursuing a much more aggressive plan than Green, who has an scientific way to make Mars look more Earth-like. The SpaceX founder has previously mentioned nuking the Red Planet to release release enough carbon dioxide to warm the atmosphere and help bring it closer to that of Earth
The SpaceX founder has previously mentioned nuking the Red Planet to release release enough carbon dioxide — locked in frozen reserves beneath the planet’s surface — to warm the atmosphere and help bring it closer to that of Earth.
Musk believes that in theory, a significantly altered atmosphere might allow for humans to colonize Mars and live there without needing support systems.
This plan was first revealed in 2019, but Musk’s latest Mars goal is to land humans on the surface of Mars within the next five to 10 years.
Musk made this comment during his appearance on Lex Friedman Podcast last month. Musk also said that there is still time for people to escape the Earth.
He is determined to get to his goal in the shortest time possible to make sure Mars can sustain itself before it gets too hot to support life for 500 million years.
