Steyning Grammar School in West Sussex faced the furore of local parents who shared photos online of the measly dinner served to pupils as part of a special Christmas celebration.

One claimed that the dog they bought eats twice as well, while another said it was “pathetic” and school officials should hang their heads with shame.

Another set of parents shared photos from a similar meal at Worthing’s Bohunt Academy. Both schools belong to the Bohunt multi-academy trust.

“It is like Oliver Twist. What are the managers eating?”

“What more proof is there that #academies can be considered businesses?”

“Probably eating out with our kids’ money.

Another parent wrote: ‘ My two boys had their Christmas Lunch at school today and got served this…… Bohunt Education Trust is this acceptable and worth £3.50 each?

The school has now apologised and offered a refund to students, blaming supply chain issues and Covid-related staff shortages as pupils called the offering 'rubbish' and 'gross, cold and soggy'

“I have emailed school today and spoke to one of their heads. A full refund was given. The school apologized and explained that it was due to staff shortages.

He added that ‘he wouldn’t give it to his dog’  and that his ‘pets eat better’.

‘I’m not a happy dad this evening… it tasted awful apparently,’ he added.

”That’s disgraceful. One parent said that they should not have served it.

Melanie Leogue of Mid Sussex Times spoke out to say that her mother had no money last year, and she regretted not making more effort. Her children have already had it hard.
