A serving West Midlands Police officer has been charged with an historical sexual offence against a child under 13.

Student officer PC Joseph Powell is due to appear at Coventry Magistrates Court on 10 November after he was charged with the historical offence, which occurred 10 years ago.

He was accused of touching a child under 13 years old between 2009 and 2011, and also of unauthorised access to police computer information.

A statement from West Midlands Police stated that a West Midlands Police officer was charged with a history of sexual offences.

“Student officer PC Joseph Powell will appear in Coventry Magistrates Court, November 10, charged with assaulting a minor by touching between 2009-2011 and a second charge of unauthorised access information on a police laptop.

‘Powell was held on suspension since his arrest 6 August 2020, while the matter was being investigated.

The force confirmed that the alleged historical sexual offense charge against him was committed before he joined the force.
