Max Halliwell, 54, died last week in intensive care following a collapse at his home in Hertfordshire.

They added: ‘It has been a terribly traumatic time since the moment she heard Max had been taken to hospital, and the worst outcome which everybody close to the family hoped might not be.

“They’re all coming together, but she doesn’t know what she should say. She loves him very much.

Geri was often described as close by friends. Max became her confidante when she reached the peak of her popularity in the 90s, after she left the girl band and flew to Paris to escape the spotlight.

Max spoke on Geri’s Life Stories 2010 episode with Piers Morgan and explained that the singer was a “daddy’s girl” and how their parents were devastated after Laurence died in 1993 from a heart attack.

He said during the film: ‘Young Geri was always wanting to be the centre of attention.

Geri was very fond of her father, I believe. Perhaps it was because her father saw her potential.

“He clearly saw something very early, so I would call her a little bit of a daddy’s girl.

The police told Max that he worked at a green technology firm and was taken by ambulance to Watford General Hospital when he arrived home from work last Wednesday.

Officers said that they are not treating the death as suspicious, and will refer it to the coroner.
