Almeni Al-Swealmeen was 32 years old. He is said to have spent more than one year living on the Kensington terraced property he shared with three asylum seekers.
It had been converted from three bedrooms to four and was managed by Serco, which provides housing for asylum seekers and is valued at around £70,000. It has been home to asylum seekers for over ten years.
MailOnline heard from a former resident, that he had complained about Serco officials regarding the living conditions at his house and begged them to let him go. They did so in 2020.
TJ Jayaweera (29), a Sri Lankan asylum seeker, revealed that his bedroom walls were thinly plywood. It was hard to fall asleep at night due to the constant noise.
Jayaweera who lived there for nearly three years, complained that the place was filthy, noisy, and terrible. While there was a lot more asylum seekers than me, my stay was the longest.
“The property was dirty and poorly maintained. Although it was difficult to live there, I couldn’t find any alternative. This building has been home to asylum seekers almost ten year.

He stated that he did not meet the landlord but maintained regular contact with Serco’s housing manager.
Jayaweera stated that he would write emails complaining about living conditions at the house to the manager. The conditions in this area are extremely poor and there are many properties that house asylum seekers.
Almeni, a Syrian-born child who was raised in Iraq, arrived in Britain seven years ago.

After leaving Islam, he converted to Christianity and attended bible classes at Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral.

A second asylum seeker stated that the bedroom walls of her room were constructed from thin plywood, making it difficult for her to fall asleep at night.
On March 27, 2017, he was confirmed to Christianity by Elizabeth Hitchcott and her husband, Mr Hitchcott. Both 77-year-olds offered to let Al Swealmeen live in their home, as they had no other place to stay.
Yesterday night, a stunned Mr Hitchcott stated that he was ‘numbed’ by the fact that Sunday’s blast had been caused by the “lovely” man who lived with him in Aigburth.
“My wife and me will have to now come to terms this fact that this man lived with us for 8 months,” the ex-soldier said.
Al Swealmeen was a quiet man who would walk with the men, and would talk endlessly and passionately about Jesus. When asked why Al Swealmeen had converted to Christianity, Hitchcott replied: “A lot of asylum seekers don’t see much in Islam.” [for them].’
According to him, he said that he knew Al Swealmeen very well and so did his wife.
The Hitchcotts were happy to have their guest leave after just eight months. They were on vacation and worried that he would be alone at home. Mrs Hitchcott explained that although he was allowed to remain and their daughter would come in, he made the decision to move on.

Social media photos show that the 32-year-old had been a frequent visitor to the track for go-kart racing.
They can’t recall Al Swealmeen speaking about anything political, but they do remember one flashpoint.
Hitchcott stated that Mr Hitchcott was involved in an earlier incident, where he was caught by police holding a very large knife on the Churchill Way Flyover.
“I do not know if he ever threatened anybody, but he was separated for many months as a consequence.
“He clearly had mental instability, because he once accused me of opening my mail.” The man came into my house and told me, “Is there anything you want to learn about me?” He said that we would never dream of such a thing. He came and apologized afterward.
“He received a small parcel, and he said it was for a friend… Makes me think about it now. He didn’t want me to poke my nose into his stuff and became extremely sensitive. He was otherwise very friendly. He would take on any job we asked.
Mrs Hitchcott claimed that Al Swealmeen would join them at the food bank, and also help around the house. He was intelligent, independent and private. He loved drawing, was interested in art and can cook great pizzas.
Al Swealmeen is seen in the chef’s whites that his hosts bought him. Photos from Mr Hitchcott are available on his web pages. Al Swealmeen hadn’t been seen by Mr Hitchcott in many years. His wife, however, met him when he was walking through the town center two years back.
It must have taken place in the spring of 2019, as it took place before Covid. He said that he had just started a course in cake decorating and was very enthusiastic. He assured me he’d keep in touch. But I did not hear from him.
