A few aisles over from the fruit and veg might not be the first place you would expect to find people fighting over fashion’s hottest ‘hero’ pieces this season.

But right now, some of the best — and most affordable — outerwear can be found under the fluorescent strip lights of your local supermarket.

Smart shoppers aren’t snobby about the fashion options available at supermarkets. There are some amazing, but super-cheap options amongst the rails. You have to act quickly as the most popular supermarket items always go fast. It’s important to get there quickly.

George at Asda’s simple, longline tailored coat (£22, direct.asda.com) has sold out almost instantly for five years.

However, George’s best-selling padded coats (£30 for a shorter length, £38 for a longline cut) are in stock.

We’re told the styles with on-trend chevron and diamond quilting (pictured, far left) are proving most popular. There has also been a frenzy for the puffa coats from Tesco’s F&F clothing range.

We love the cosy longline caramel puffa (£56) and the punchy red hooded style, just £34.

The fleece jacket was once the exclusive preserve of hikers. But, designers Stella McCartney and Isabel Marant are now making fashionable cuts with cool colours and printed fabrics. For a fraction of the cost — £15 to be exact — you can get a leopard print fleece from Nutmeg at Morrisons.

The checked shacket (that’s a cross between a shirt and a jacket) is a trend that has endured another season. Tu at Sainsbury’s has a great range of shackets starting at £20, but for something a little smarter there is also a gorgeous grey boucle coat for £28.

Like all these cut-price coats, it won’t be around for long. Don’t wait!
