After an altercation broke out among a crowd, 12 people were killed and 17 others were hurt in the New Year’s Eve stampede that took place at India’s Shrine. 

Investigations have been launched to determine the cause of the stampede that occurred at Mata Vaishnav Devi shrine, Kashmir at 2.40 AM.

Seventeen people with ‘serious injuries’ were taken to Naraina Hospital after a rescue operation, while the victims were identified at another hospital in the Katra base camp.

An investigation has been ordered into what caused the stampede early this morning at the Mata Vaishnav Devi shrine in Kashmir

Investigations have been initiated into the circumstances of the stampede that occurred at Mata Vaishnav Devi shrine, Kashmir.

Mahesh was a devotee, who only gave one name. He said that the stampede began at one of the gates from which pilgrims could enter the shrine and then left. 

“Something occurred near the gate and I was caught up in a crowd of people,” he said. He described how he fell and then suffocated, but was able to rise from the ground.

“I witnessed people walking over bodies. Although it was horrifying, I helped to rescue some people.

Another devotee named Priyansh stated that he was with 10 of his friends from New Delhi who arrived Friday night in order to visit the shrine. He claimed that two of his close friends were killed in the accident.

He said, “I’ve never seen anything similar to this.”

Dheeraj Kumar 26 was identified as the victim, Sonu Pandey (24), Viney Kumar (24), Mamta (38), Dharmveer Singh (35) and Vaneet Kumar (38) according to India TV News. 

Dilbag Sing, Jammu and Kashmir Director of Police, stated that there had been an altercation among a few young men before the stampede.

He explained that police officers and civil administrators responded quickly to the situation and ordered the crowd back into order. However, by then, it was too late. 

Indian Prime Minster Narendra Modi posted his condolences via Twitter. 

He expressed deep sadness at the deaths of people in a stampede.
