After their police patrol car collided with a BMW on a country road, two officers have lost their lives. A man in his 20s was arrested for drink driving.

After being severely injured in an accident involving two cars on a rural road, two police officers are now fighting for their lives.

They were driving a white Peugeot 308 on patrol when the vehicle collided into a BMW grey at about 1.20am, on Eriswell Road near Lakenheath in Suffolk.

According to a spokesperson for Suffolk Police, the officers sustained ‘life-threatening injuries.

The scene was attended by emergency personnel from all levels of the service: the fire department, police, ambulance service and air ambulance as well the volunteer Suffolk Accident Rescue Service.

This morning, the tragic collision took place at the B1112 near Eriswell in Suffolk.

A man in his 20s was taken into custody by police on suspicion that he caused serious injury through dangerous driving or driving while under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

They were both taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital by land ambulance.

He was arrested and taken to West Suffolk Hospital Bury St Edmunds as precaution.

Since then, he was released. He was brought to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre where he is being interrogated.

They were taken by air ambulance to Addenbrooke Hospital.

Suffolk Police stated that the injured officers were not responding to any emergency calls at the time.

Both directions of the B1112 are closed between Underly Road & Lords Walk “to allow an investigation of the circumstances of this incident and to recover vehicles to be taken place”.

Police need witnesses or anyone who might have witnessed vehicles that match the description of the vehicle involved in this collision to assist them.
