While promoting his new film Power of the Dog (an adaptation of Thomas Savage’s novel), the Sherlock actor made the remarks.
He told Sky News: ‘We need to fix the behaviour of men. The engine must be lifted a little.
“I believe it’s always relevant. In a world where the status quo is being questioned and torn apart, then finally calling out the deficiencies of patriarchy and its inadequacies, it’s even greater.
You get this rebellious aspect, this denial and this childish defensive posture of “not all men are evil”. It’s not true. We need to just shut up and learn.
“There are not enough abuses being recognized, and there isn’t enough disadvantages being acknowledged. At the same time, someplace along the line (maybe not right now but at some point along the way) we have to look into the reasons behind oppressive behaviour in order to correct the men.
It comes after his co-star, Kirsten Dunst, admitted that she ‘isolated’ herself from Cumberbatch on set.
