A quarter of 450 pregnant women don’t know they have a baby before half way through the pregnancy

The UK’s one-in-450 pregnancies is unaware that their baby will arrive in week 20, half the way through the pregnancy. One in 2,500 women remain unaware of the reality until labor begins.

This phenomenon is known as “cryptic pregnancy” or “pregnancy denial”.

The majority of cryptic pregnancies are experienced by young women.

Also, women with irregular menstrual periods are more likely not to see the signs that they are pregnant. Women with polycystic-ovary syndrome (PCOS) are especially at risk. Small cysts can grow on their ovaries, leading to hormonal imbalances that often lead to nonexistent or irregular periods.

Some women will still have monthly bleeding throughout pregnancy. A scan by your local GP might be all that is needed to confirm this.

Although women might not think they will find out they are pregnant, those who take the Pill faithfully may still experience it.

8 out of 100 women are able to get pregnant on the Pill. This is usually due not to problems with Pills but the person taking it.
