WHAT ARE YOU AWARE OF WHEN PURCHASING LIP FILLERS

Hyaluronic acid is the most common ingredient in lip fillers. It’s a natural substance that can be found in skin, hair and other tissues.

Although hyaluronic acid injections can be safe, they may cause swelling, redness, bruising and itching around the site.

Different side effects can affect different people and you should discuss these with a specialist prior to any injections.

If someone gets cold sores it can trigger an outbreak, and the injections may not be suitable for people who are at risk of keloid scarring – when scars become large and grow out of control.

When:

1. UUse of unregulated, cheap products can cause tissue reactions that lead to secondary infections.

2. Unsanitary treatment, such as in a patient’s couch or back at a gym.

3. When there’s poor aftercare for example use of make up immediately after treatment.

4. Syringes may be shared. It is an inefficient practice that can be used to save money, but it is common.

Here are some tips to make safe and effective lip fillers

1. NHS England advises that you ensure that your physician is a licensed medical professional.

2. You should ensure that you are treated in a professional environment like a clinic.

3. Make sure your practitioner is licensed and insured.

4. As part of your treatment, make sure you schedule a follow-up appointment.

5. Follow the aftercare guidelines and make sure you are able to reach your doctor in an emergency.
