Today marks the 119th birthday of the woman who is considered to be oldest living. 

Kane Tanaka, from Japan, greeted the festivities in the Fukuoka Prefecture.

Family members of Ms Tanaka say that her mother was born in January 1903 eleven years before World War I started. They hope she lives to 120.

She currently resides at a nursing home in Fukuoka and while the centenarian is unable to speak, she communicates with staff using gestures and enjoys chocolate and fizzy drinks.

The Japan Times reported that Ms Tanaka enjoys number puzzles and is looking for new challenges. 

One year after Ms Tanaka’s birth, the Russo-Japanese War started. Tanaka also experienced in her youth the last year of Japan’s Meiji period, which is considered to have been a pivotal time of modernisation.

Guinness World Records recognized her as the oldest person living when she turned 116 years old in 2019. 

She was 117 years old and 261 days respectively, making her the Japan’s oldest living person. 

According to Guinness World Records, Ms Tanaka married her cousin in 1922. They owned a noodle shop named Tanaka Mochiya that sold rice cakes, zenzai and udon.

Both her husband and the eldest child fought in Second Sino-Japanese War, which started in 1937.

Ms Tanaka, who was 90 years old, had cataract surgery. Ms Tanaka, who was also the record holder, had colorectal cancer surgery at age 103.  

As of 2020, Ms Tanaka has five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, The Times reported last year.

Eiji, the Japan Times’ 62-year old grandson, said that she would be happy to express his gratitude soon.

“I want her to be healthy, happy and have fun every day as she grows up.”

Previous to Ms Tanaka, other people had been said be older.

Last month China’s oldest person, who is also claimed to be the oldest person ever, died aged of 135.

Alimihan Seyiti was born in Shule County, north-western Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. He is from Komuxerik. 

But this is not confirmed international. 

Last summer a woman in Turkey also claims to have celebrated her 119th birthday, which would make her older than Ms Tanaka. 

Turkish media reports that Seker Arslan celebrated this remarkable milestone in Amasya, surrounded by her loved ones.

She was 119 years old according to her driving licence.
