Andrew Barker (Keyboard player, 808 State) dies in electronic music tribute at the age 53

  • 808 State was formed in Manchester, England in 1987. Their name is derived from the Roland TR-808 drum-machine.

  • In 1989, Gerald quit 808 State to start his solo venture. The remaining members brought Andrew and Darren Partington in as DJs. They are known collectively as the Spinmasters.

The band shared the news of the death on their Twitter account on Sunday.

This message stated: “It is with a heavy heart that we inform you of Andrew Barker’s passing.

The statement was accompanied by a black-and-white image of Andrew smiling. 

Andrew’s cause was unknown at the time this article was written.

Another devotee wrote: “Heartbreaking news. My heart goes out Andy’s family and friends. 

“Had the privilege of seeing 808 State many times. Also great memories from watching The Thunderdome’s spinmasters.

The music, knowledge, and humor of Andy will not be forgotten. RIP.

A fan also shared the following: “Terrible news.” I’m deeply saddened. Andrew was truly a pioneer in British music scene. His work is a testament to his legacy. 

“On a personal note his early work in 808 State, the Quadrastate albums got me interested in dancing and later DJing RIP Andrew.

808 State formed in Manchester in 1987, taking their name from the Roland TR-808 drum machine.  

Original members Graham Massey, Martin Price and Gerald Simpson released their debut album Newbuild in September 1988 and they achieved commercial success in 1989 when their song Pacific State was picked up by BBC Radio One.

Gerald left 808 State in 1989 to work on his own solo project and the remaining members brought in DJs Andrew and Darren Partington, known as the Spinmasters.
