Gary Lineker insists that he is full of admiration for Josh Cavallo, who became the first professional male footballer to be out in the world.
The versatile Adelaide United star released a lengthy and emotional clip on social media saying he has been ‘hiding who he is’ and ‘living a double life’.
Lineker, a former England striker and Match of the Day host, said that he hopes Cavallo’s actions will ‘erase any fear others may have.

The ex-Barcelona and Tottenham star said, “It’s absurd to think that coming out in football is a brave act to do in football.” It is, though, and Josh has my admiration for forging a path that others may follow.
“I’m sure that the overwhelming majority football lovers will support him, and erase any fears others may have.”
Barcelona and ex -Spain centre back Pique also gave Cavallo high praises, thanking him personally in a heartfelt video.

“The world of football has moved on and we are still far behind.
Antoine Griezmann, Pique’s ex-Barcelona teammate, tweeted meanwhile: ‘Proud to you @JoshuaCavallo’ followed by a fist-and-heart emoji.
Cavallo, 21, who has also played for fellow A-League side Western United and third-tier outfit Melbourne City NPL in Australia, said in his video: ‘There is something personal that I need to share with everyone. I am a soccer player and I am gay.
‘Growing-up, I felt the need for hiding myself because I was ashamed. If I wasn’t ashamed, I wouldn’t be able to do what my heart desires and be gay.
“Coming out to my loved one, my peers, my friends, teammates, and coaches has been amazing. The support I have received is incredible.
“I want to show people that it is okay to be yourself and play soccer. If anything, people will respect you more. [by coming out].
“I want to show people who are scared and struggling that they don’t need to act like you.” You were made to be you, not someone else.

The PFA and the Premier League were among the sporting organizations to tweet their support. Arsenal posted a message that said: ‘You’re an inspiration to millions. Everyone has the right to be who they are. You make football a better sport.
Kelly Smith, Arsenal Women legend, and Sam Kerr, Chelsea Women striker, were among the gay female stars that sent their support.
Fans have also taken to Twitter to praise the one cap Australia U20 international, which made 15 starts in Adelaide United’s 2020-21 season.
One wrote: “Josh Cavallo, an Australian soccer player, has come out as gay. I couldn’t be happier.
The 21-year-old also played for Western United, and third-tier Melbourne City NPL.
“So many young men will see it and see the hope. It’s so important. I hope he continues to be free from homophobia and abuse, although it is possible that he may be naive.
Others shared their thoughts with one post: “Josh Cavallo is a champion. You are a pioneer.
“It is terrible that this is still so difficult, but you are breaking down barriers, paving way for others, and no doubt helping some children get through difficult stuff with your example. Bravo.
Another user commented, “Coming out can be difficult for anyone.” Coming out for someone who is a professional athlete would be unfathomably difficult.
“The courage of Josh Cavallo has been unmatched. A genuine trailblazer. Live your best life, legend.’
Another person complimented Cavallo and the club’s actions, writing: ‘Big news from Josh Cavallo. He was very brave to come out.
“Big congratulations to him, his team and for standing by him. Let’s hope that more players don’t be afraid to speak out. @AdelaideUnited is a great place to stand by your player.
Oliver Caffrey, Melbourne’s sports reporter, expressed gratitude for the support Cavallo received from those not following the highest-level professional leagues of Australia and New Zealanad.
He tweeted, “It’s pretty difficult to do this website, but Josh Cavallo created extremely positive vibes for the timeline,’
‘The outpouring of support, from #ALeague people or not, has been so good to see.’
Cavallo has already had an impact on at least one person. One user added: “Needed to have a good reason for me to come out of my current Twitter hiatus. Josh Cavallo’s is a damn good reason. Bravo, lad!
Others said that Cavallo’s positive announcement was a good sign, but it also shows how far we still have to go in the matter.
‘That a professional sportsperson coming out is *still* newsworthy shows how far we have to go, despite how far we’ve already come,’ one wrote.
Another tweet warned other A-League sides by saying: “I want every A-League Men club to comment positively about Josh Cavallo.
“I must see it.” To not say something is to say it.
Cavallo was a former player at Melbourne Victory, and is currently a champion of the A-league in Melbourne City. He also spent time with their youth teams.
After scoring six goals in 54 youth games, he secured an A-League move from Western United in 2019, after his contract expired.
After playing 10 matches with the Green and Black, he signed an agreement in February with 2015-16 champions Adelaide United. In May, he was awarded a two-year contract.
Cavallo was awarded the club’s rising star award at the end last season after a successful season that saw him record two assists in 18 games.
Adelaide United finished fifth in the A-League as a team last season. With 39 points from 26 matches, they qualified for the Finals series. It consists of six of the best teams at the end the regular season.
They defeated Brisbane Roar in the elimination semifinals. Cavallo was on the bench for 13 minutes. However, they lost against Sydney FC in the semi-final stage.
The new A-League season begins next month on the 19th of November.
