As the popularity of crypto-art continues to grow, a British collective of artists plans to start a collection NFTs that will grant stars ownership.

The Ten Thousand Suns project, created by the Adequate Content collective, says it will issue 9,096 NFTs which correspond to every star visible with the naked eye from Earth later this month.

Every NFT will provide proof of ownership for a digital artifact created collectively, which includes an interactive representation the star in the sky.

NFT stands for non-fungible token. A unique digital token encoded with the signature of an artist that verifies its authenticity and ownership is called an NFT. 

The ownership of digital assets can be represented by NFTs, which include images, videos, music and cryptocurrency wallet names.

Prior high-profile digital assets to go up for sale as NFTs include Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s first tweet, which fetched $2.9 million, as well as the classic viral video ‘Charlie bit my finger’ which brought in $761,000.

Ten Thousand Suns creators admit that the idea of “paying huge amounts of money to the digitally absurd” was what motivated them. 

One creator, who asked not to be identified due to concerns over, stated that they thought taking control of the stars was the best thing they could do.

The art collective plans to launch the NFTs on December 22, to coincide with the launch of the James Webb Space Telescope.

The price of the offering has not yet been determined, however, the backers claim that the tokens would likely be between 0.1 and 0.3 Ethereum. This is equivalent to approximately $400-$1,200 in current exchange rates.

Backers promise that there will be many benefits as they sell the shares, including an enhanced reality view of the star to help identify the owner through the phone’s cameras.

After the token run is complete, creators promise they will be using some proceeds to pay one NFT holder for a free space flight.

The international treaty bans the ownership of objects in space, something that NFT creators joke about.

Numerous companies claim to have been able to offer naming rights to stars in the past. However, this practice has been condemned by The International Astronomical Union which is the only legal authority for naming celestial bodies. 

Numerous frauds have occurred in the NFT sector, including Evolved Apes. In this case, a developer stole $2.7 million from the sale of NFTs.

DailyMail.com reported that the Ten Thousand Suns creators insisted their intentions were honest, but they said it was fair.

One of the artists stated that art has changed media over time. “The medium of art is subject to change as technology advances.”  

NFT sales this year have exceeded $12.6 billion and it shows no sign of slowing down.

Art Basel Miami was abuzz with the trend. Gallerists and artists alike were encouraged to make their own NFTs, while visitors to the event were also invited.

The record sale for an NFT was set in March, when a massive digital collage by Mike Winkelmann, aka Beeple, went for an astonishing $69.3 million at a Christie’s auction.
