Bear Grylls claimed that Prince George’s first ant was something he had to enjoy at age six, when he and Carole Middleton were married.

The British adventurer met George, now eight, after being invited by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to skipper a yacht during the King’s Cup regatta, a three day charity sailing race off the Isle of Wight in August in 2019.

Grylls won the Cowes Week race. After revealing that he loved Bear’s interactive Netflix series, Kate asked Grylls to meet her daughter.

According to George, 47 years old, George stared at him with “amazing wide eyes” after asking him if he’d ever eaten insects. He also praised him for facing his fears and calling him a hero.

Asking him about his six-year-old son’s first ant, he replied that he did not mean to.

We were doing something in support of Prince William’s Kings Cup event. When we got down, the royal family was there. It was the mother of the Duchess and Duke of Cambridge who asked if she could come to say hi to George. “He’s a huge fan of your interactive Netflix show.

“We were talking and as soon as we started to chat, there was a torrent of ants crossing his feet. We looked at them and he looked at us with these amazing eyes. I replied “Come on,” and he responded “Really!”

Bear once recommended that ants be eaten as a survival strategy in his programs.

Bear remembered, “We ate and it wasn’t a great privilege to give the future King his first Ant.” “His eyes were as bright and open as any other person when they are out in nature and have to face some fears, but overcome them. Bravo, he is truly a hero.

Bear described the incident in his memoir Never Give Up. Bear revealed that George looked ‘trepidation, excitement,’ as he watched as a stream of bugs walked by their feet.

He wrote, “I knew that look well.” “I smiled at them and said, ‘Have your ever eaten an insect?’ He looked nervously at me. He shook his head nervously. You and I? I looked at him, then he turned to me and nodded. After I had grabbed an ant for him, I got one for my own. ‘One, two, three, and in it goes… ready?’

“He was more nervous than before. “I smiled and reassured him.” “It will be okay. We can do this… OK? Here we go, one, two, three. The look on the faces of survivors as they try something new from the menu is something I’ll never forget.

‘Whoever they are, it’s always priceless. Prince George’s eyes are bigger than mine, but I can’t imagine ever seeing a wider smile. This was an enjoyable moment and it is something I wish he will remember when he becomes king. Who can forget their first ant, after all?

The adventurer also told the story of when he fed former President Barack Obama a salmon that had been ravaged by a bear – despite the best efforts of the secret service.

The pair were filming an episode of Running Wild with Bear Grylls in 2015 and had found a salmon carcass along the side of the road which he picked up and preserved in between two pieces of moss in his bag.

On GMB, he stated that he had done a survey the previous day to determine a route. He found many carcasses with half-eaten carcasses near the river.

It was perfect, I thought. But secret service said no. First of all, he doesn’t like to eat or drink on video. We’ll need special salmon if we decide to do this.

“But, the President was fantastic – we sat and enjoyed a cup tea. I started cooking it,  I could see the White House chef with a platter behind the camera, but he never asked for it.

“So, we all sat down to have the salmon. The crew had fancy salmon the next night.”
