As the seasons get colder, clothes become cozier.

An elegance coach warned that many women are making themselves look “basic” by not paying more attention to their clothes.

Anna Bey, who splits her time in London and Geneva, and runs the online business School of Affluence, explained that fall fail-safes such as plaid shirts or leggings make women look like they don’t care.

Even pieces that seem expensive, such as Chelsea boots and teddy jackets, should be avoided.

FEMAIL has revealed the eight wardrobe staples Anna recommends you avoid.

Anna stated, “Chelsea boots are a typical everyday footwear.” This shoe is not dismissed, by the way.

“But the problem with this boot, is that women wear them the wrong way. They love to wear it with skinny trousers and skinny jeans, which is why they look so simple.

‘I think this is probably one of the most common looks that we have seen,’ she said, before adding: ‘And it’s not flattering for most body shapes.

To look good in this look you need to have a supermodel body with long, slim legs and tall heights. But most people don’t have that type of body so we won’t look great.

‘Worse is also the colour of your boots, because you have a lot more brown. That really downgrades it. It cuts off the legs ladies, so I don’t want you wearing this. You’re going to appear shorter than you actually are.

Not flattering: Teddy coats

Anna isn't a fan of the teddy coat and compared the garment to a 'morning robe.' Stock image

The elegant coach suggested that we call the teddy jacket a morning robe. Because literally that’s how I sometimes feel like it looks like. It looks like you just woken up. You put on your morning robe and are going to brush you teeth.

“This coat It is very unflattering for anyone, especially if you aren’t skinny. For those of us with regular bodies, it is impossible to get away with it.

The teddy-coat doesn’t have any shape. It’s very straight, very boxy. With the really thick material, you look wider, more masculine, and you lose your body shape.

“So, if your goal is to get a fall coat, you should get one with a more feminine silhouette, perhaps a belt, or a defined waist… at the very minimum, get something a little more sleeker and made of thinner materials.

Casual cargo jackets

Anna warned against wearing cargo jackets (pictured in stock image), saying they rarely 'upgrade' a look

Anna cautioned against wearing cargo jackets (pictured in the stock image), as they rarely ‘upgrade a look.

Anna said, “I don’t mind a bit of cargo for a right occasion,”

“Look at Kate Middleton, an example. She does work cargo, and it works perfectly for her. But she would only wear it for the right activities.

“Unfortunately, ladies they turn to cargo when it’s fall. I don’t understand why. It doesn’t actually make a person look better. It’s more casual.

You can wear a nice blazer, or a nice structured jacket instead. You should look appropriate for the activity you are doing.

No open toed sandals

Anna stated, “Open-toed sandals do not suit women in fall or winter.” It This is not appropriate.

Cheap chunky scarves

“There is something special about the really heavy knit… The elegance coach said, “I feel it looks very plain Jane.”

“You might want to consider if you would like a warm scarf that isn’t made from this material. Maybe you want more texture.

“You don’t want those big nets. They aren’t expensive, but I don’t know why. It’s just how it is.

It’s not elegant and it’s a bit too cold.

“Of course there will be exceptions. There are always exceptions to most rules.

She mentioned that open toed sandals look great when worn with evening gowns.

“Please note that peep-toe shoes are technically considered closed shoes so they don’t need to be stored away. They are still fine to be worn during winter months..

Black tights shouldn’t be worn with colorful shorts or shoes.

The elegance coach stated that black tights worn with shorts in contrasting colours are not acceptable. It doesn’t make sense.

“If the contrast is a bit, for example dark grey shorts and black tights, that’s okay because you’re in the same color region.

“But a contrasting color looks strange and it doesn’t look flattering. Black tights with, I guess, dark shorts will give it a monochrome effect, and they will make you look longer. But when there is a contrast in the colour, it breaks it down and makes you look shorter.

Anna said that contrasting shoes with black tights are a violation of the same rule and should be avoided. This will ensure that your legs look longer.

High boots and leggings look like you’ve given in to the world.

“This ladies, symbolises that I don’t care who cares, what ever, I can’t bother. I’m lazy.

“For those who want to look more elegant, we can’t go this direction ladies.

“It’s certainly not an elegant appearance, and I think for personal brands if it isn’t, then you need to move on.”

‘Masculine Plaid Shirts’

They might be popular, but Anna says plaid shirts (pictured in stock image) are best avoided

Although they might be fashionable, Anna recommends that plaid shirts (pictured in stock photo) are avoided.

Anna stated that plaid shirts seem very downgraded. It looks very masculine and it doesn’t seem like you care.

It won’t elevate you, but it will make you look more masculine.
