A former police officer who sexually assaulted a schoolgirl has been fined £200 for breaching a court order.

Alexander Murphy, 49, was placed on the sex offenders’ list for the assault and supplying alcohol to other children.

Officers discovered an unregistered credit card on the phone of the man when they visited his home for routine checks.

Murphy, who resigned in shame, claimed it was an oversight, but later failed to report at a police station, breaking the rules for sex offenders.

Murphy, a resident of Strathaven in Lanarkshire, was present at Hamilton Sheriff Court, where he admitted to failing to notify police about the credit card between June-July.

Sheriff Alasdair MackFadyen issued a fine to him.

Morag McLintock, deputy fiscal, told the court that his mobile phone had been checked by officers due to his status.

“During that search, a ZOPA Credit card was found.

“He attended on the 30th July and notified the Police of the credit card. He was then told that a fiscal report would be made.

“It appears that this was a mistake which has been rectified by the accused.

Andy Iles, who is defending, stated that he now receives Universal Credit and was previously a police officer.

‘Police checked his phone and his bank app and found this card that had been lost.

“Officers were sympathetic to that, and he later attended an officer station but it was closed and then reopened.

“It is a serious mistake and there has been a significant change in circumstances ever since his conviction.”

Sheriff MacFadyen stated: “I’m going treat this as an actual mistake.” To prove your carelessness, a financial penalty is appropriate.

Murphy was released from jail in March 2019 after he admitted to sexually assaulting the schoolgirl, 15 years old, at a Uddingston, Lanarkshire house party.

He said to her, “You are my favorite, you are a little cutie.” You have a cute smile, but I don’t mean that in paedophile terms.

The former constable also admitted a breach of the peace and was fined £1,000.

He was prohibited from unsupervised contact with girls younger than 16 years of age, placed under supervision for two year and placed on the sex offenders’ register.
