One of the most stunning images by the RAF of a Hercules airplane climbing vertically in the air is a tribute to the best photographers within the service. 

After nearly 1500 submissions, the RAF Photographic Competition 2021 has announced its winners.

From last year’s four categories of Personnel, Current Equipment Operations, Exercise, and Video, the competition now has seven. Head-to-head competition in People’s Choice: The judges will select the best images.

SAC Craig Williams, with ‘Pandemic’ was the winner in the RAF Association sponsored Personnel category. The top spot was awarded to his strong image of an RAF doctor conducting Covid-19 tests in Derbyshire, as part of the Government’s effort to stop the pandemic.

Cpl Lee Matthews was crowned the Winner of the prestigious Current RAF Equipment section.

Cpl Matthews snapped a breathtaking photo of a C-130J Super Hercules aircraft performing a nose-up break into a flying circuit’ from the runway at RAF Akrotiri (Cyprus). 

Judge Hilary Roberts stated that the entries this year reflect both Britain’s enormous contribution and its fundamental role in keeping our skies safe.

“Congratulations, all winners and participants on an outstanding standard of photography during an extremely challenging year.”

Jamie Peters was co-judge WO2: ‘Picking out the best images from all the submissions was a challenge. The quality of entries were just as high as the variety of them, which shows the diversity of tasks carried out by the RAF.

“From supporting the Covid pandemic at Home to Operations abroad, photographers have captured it all. I was a fellow soldier photographer and I sought images that would make me regret not having taken them. I found many that fit that description which made my job more difficult. Bravo to all who participated.

'Mind over Matter' by Cpl Lee 'Matty' Matthews. The photo shows a refuelling sortie supporting Operation SHADER conducted at night from a Royal Air Force Voyager, refuelling a pair of RAF Typhoons over the Middle East. The wave included two Royal Air Force Typhoons, followed by an Airbus Defence Voyager which provided the Typhoons with fuel throughout their missions. The aircraft operated all day and night throughout the year in support of Op Shader as the UK and allied nations fought to defeat ISIS

Cpl. Lee ‘Matty’ Matthews – “Mind over Matter” Photo of a Royal Air Force Voyager carrying out a night refuelling mission to support Operation SHADER. It refuelled a pair RAF Typhoons in the Middle East. Two Royal Air Force Typhoons were followed by an Airbus Defence Voyager, which supplied fuel for the Typhoons throughout their mission. Op Shader was supported by the UK and its allies. The aircraft flew night and day throughout the year to support the operation.

Some 130 personnel from across the RAF have been conducting community COVID testing in South Derbyshire

The RAF Typhoon Display Team aircraft, BLACKJACK, piloted by Flt Lt Sainty flying over the iconic White Cliffs of southern British coastline ahead of the anniversary of the Battle of Britain. It was entered in the People's Choice category of this year's awards

British Army soldiers from 13 Air Assault Support Regiment work closely with Royal Air Force's 84 Squdron, Search and Rescue during an exercise at RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus. The exercise involved several heavy loads, such as supplies, a quadbike and a trailer being underlung to the Bell HAR2 Griffin Helicopter. The exercise was part of Op FORTIS

During the exercise, RAF Odiham personnel as well as chinook planes were operated from Naval Air Facility El Centro in California. Training scenarios can be realistically created by the terrain and climate that are typical for overseas operations.

Royal Air Force Chinooks from 28 Sqn RAF Benson deliver aggregate onto Pewit Island in the Portmouth Harbour. Pewit Island currently has no birdlife and it was hoped aggregate would make it more attractive to nesting birds. Due to shallow water and amount of aggregate required, air delivery by helicopter is the only viable method

Royal Air Force Chinooks 28 Sqn RAF Benson transport aggregate to Pewit Island, Portmouth Harbour Pewit Island is currently devoid of birdlife. It was thought that aggregate could make the island more appealing to nesting birds. Because of the shallow water depth and required amount of aggregate, helicopter air transport is only option.
