“I could be telling them all my problems, and then they start giggling so I have to apologize. I thought, “this isn’t working”.’

The comedian continued to insist that celebrities should not be quick to label substance misuse problems as addition after he had suffered from excessive drinking in the past.

Jack explained, “Once you place a label on something like that, you are empowering that thing.” It’s a very loaded word. If it is an addiction you are an addict and we can’t help it…

“A bad habit is easier to break than an addiction, just mentally.”

The performer explained how he’d seen a hypnotherapist in a bid to stop smoking and the therapist implored him to stop labelling himself an addict, with the professional telling him ‘you’ll stop when you’re ready’.

He claimed that he had smoked his last cigarette after putting less pressure upon himself.

Jack said that he struggled in lockdown because he couldn’t continue his comedy. So he wrote What Is Your Problem? to fill the time.

He also insists that people should not accept failure as a way to overcome it.

Star insists that he understands that failure is part of life, but that it should not be celebrated or normalized.

He admitted: ‘I have failed in so many areas and I’m not proud of it. I’m not going to go round saying, “It’s great. I made that mistake.”

The star has always been open about his mental illness struggles. 

He wrote in 2011: “I have struggled with depression all my adult life. And it’s probably fair to say that I had a tendency towards it even as a child, during my school days.

“There was often – and this happens quite often with comics – a sense that I didn’t belong anywhere.

‘At school, it was difficult for me to fit in. Although I thought I was blaming the school at the time, it was likely that it was me. It would have happened in any school.

 ‘After school, things were a bit grim for a while. At one point, I felt really lost. I had always felt a strong sense that I was called to a vocation. I didn’t know what it was.
